Fucked up hospital experience *Updated* Should I sue???
    #2444412 - 03/17/04 08:28 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

Something really scary happened to me today. I went to the hospital for a gastroscopy (camera into my stomach) because I vomited loads of bright red blood a few weeks back after going on a downer and drinking a bottle of vodka. I informed the doctor that I have a rare  inherited blood condition (porphyria) and that I'm extremely hyper sensitive to a huge range of drugs and that some anesthetics could be fatal to me. He sprayed some anesthetic spray down my throat that he said was ok with my condition and proceeded to feed the camera down but I started gagging and in the end needed an injection to put me out. When I came around I didn't know who or where I was and ended up ripping the IV out of my hand and staggering out of the hospital with blood pouring all over the place. Luckily some paramedics spotted me and escorted me back to the hospital or else I could have got run over or something..

Anyone else ever had any weird reactions to pharmaceutical drugs like this?

I had that exact same procedure as you! I was put under with something type of 'post-amnesiac' drug?? That's what the doctor said, technically I wasn't fully unconcious during the procedure, but I have only a tiny tiny faint recollection of that day. Apparently after my procedure I went with my mom to a resting room and had a conversation about marjiuana, something I would never do by the way, also I somehow followed her out to the car. I only remember 'coming to' in the car for a second and looking over at her with no understanding of why I was in a car. I then blanked out again for 4 more hours and came to in my bed at home. Maybe they used the same drug with you since it might not be a true anaesthetic drug. It was really disorienting and scary for me.

I'm pretty sure I was fully unconscious. What pisses me off is that there was no one there when I came around! Fuck knows what possesed me to rip out the needle as I'm normaly terrified of them. The hospital is next to a very busy main road and if it hadn't been for the paramedics I'm sure I would have got run over or something!

I've had a similar hospital experience.  I was given some sort of tranquilizer to calm me down and it worked, but I woke up strapped to the bed and freaking out.  I wriggled free and took out my IV and then ran senselessly out into the ER.  I could hear people yelling at me, but it wasn't registering and I ran right outside.  I was so confused.  I got lost in the parking lot for and just wandered around until a nurse found me and led me back to the bed.  The straps were alot tighter the next time.

Yeah, that was pretty traumatizing.  I hope you're okay.

I'm feeling fine now EllemyshShade although still somewhat shook up. I can still remember the whole experience soo vividly but had absolutely no control of my actions, it was like I was a zombie or something.

How's about this for one.

I have epilepsy but rarely get seizures and i'm on medication so it's unusual that i get one but i can tell when i'm about to have one.

Anyways about a year and a half ago in mid November I was sitting in my basement playing Grand Theft Auto 3 and I felt one coming on so i turned off the ps2 and layed down on the ground so that i wouldnt get hurt. Next thing I know i'm coming to and my dad is beside me and i tell him im gonna throw up so he gets me a pail and i go nuts hey? After that I remember nothing. That's the only day i've had more then one seizure. Anyways after I threw up I guess i had a second seizure. Then my dad dragged me on to the couch and called my mom to take me to the hospital. Now this is the part that scares me. After the first seizure the next thing I remembered was waking up in the hospital and throwing up. Turns out my mom came to pick me up and she walked me to the van, drove to the hospital and walked me into the place and everything. I was concious but I dont remember a single god damn thing. It still scares the shit out of me. Anyways I got to the hospital and had a third seizure and they put me on valium to calm me down or something. It was the most fucked up day ever. NOT fun at all.

Threatening or traumatic experiences can cause people to forger what they are doing and can sometimes forget other things.

HeHe, reading this thread reminds me of one i was in hospital after having a brick wall fall on my leg when i was 15, i had to have my leg pinned back together and a 2 week stay in hospital, about 6 days after the operation i was taken down to have a cast put on my leg. I was slumped on the table and was told to inhale on the nitrous oxide, so i hit the tank for all it was worth and got high as i could, then i felt the biggest pain in my life. The nurse had picked up my leg by my big toe and was holding it in the air by the big toe only, still with a fresh 12 inch gash from the operation on my leg, it was the most painful thing ever, even worse than the break itself, what made it worse was my leg muscle went into spasm, so my freshly pinned broken ankle was being bent back and forth insuring i was in much much pain, i was screaming at the nurse calling her a bitch, slut every name under the sun, she kept saying politely you will come down in a few seconds and realise your the one causing the pain, i wouldn't believe any of it, sure enough i came down (after laying off the nox :P) and turned bright red with embarassment as my leg stopped spasming but feeling more pain, queue another hit of the nox and much more screaming :P that was a long 10 minutes of my life. Sorry to go off on a tagent, but this thread reminded me of it. That was a weird time in hospital, the first 3 days were a blur of waking up screaming and nurses coming over and inhecting god knows what into me and sleeping alot. Anyway, sorry to hear what happened to you, doesnt sound like it was a fun experience at all :frown:

In my first post I said that I'd informed the doctor that I have a rare inherited blood condition (porphyria) and that I'm extremely hyper sensitive to a huge range of drugs and that some anesthetics could be fatal to me, well it turns out he gave me an anesthetic (Midazolam) that is unsafe with porphyria.  :frown:

There's no wonder that I reacted in the way I did because when you have a porphyria attack it effects you neurologically and turns you into a complete zombie as well as fucking many of your major organs up.  :frown:

I went to college the following day after the procedure and kept on blacking out in class and nearly fell asleep at the wheel whilst I was driving home and then proceeded to sleep for nearly 24 hours.

I'm extremely lucky to have regained consciousness after the procedure.

Does anyone think I have good grounds for suing?

it is potentially fatal? if it is and you told your doctor you had the disease which doesn't allow you to take that anesthetic, you probably do have grounds for a lawsuit. find a lawyer that will give you a free consultation or something.

Yes, the condition is potentially fatal.

Funnily enough my mother (who passed the condition on to me) is in hospital with acute abdominal pains due to a medication fuck up by a different doctor!  :frown:

This is the second time I've had a major porphyria attack due to a doctors incompetence.

whenever my dad passes out, he gets a grand mal seizure, which is the worst kind you can get
his first time passing out was when he was a kid, doing that dumb thing where you make yourself pass out by hyperventilating and then choking yourself. When he came too, his frieends were crowded around him asking if he was ok

good thing he has only passed out twice in his life

In the desert
I saw a creature, naked, bestial,
who, squatting upon the ground,
Held his heart in his hands,
And ate of it.
I said, "Is it good, friend?"
"It is bitter, bitter," he answered;
"But I like it
Because it is bitter,
And because it is my heart."
