I've known a few strippers. The are often putting themselves through school or some such. They aren't different from the girl on the street in her tight pants. No better and no worse.

youve never read McLuhan?
But the claim would work as well if it were said 'culture' instead of media, encompassing all mechanims shaping perceptions of value in a society incl institutional, family, media, friends etc..

Does it?
'X (in general)' != all X
would you consider it false then to claim that cats have tails, since some cats dont, or that humans have 2 legs since some might have them amputated?
Id would seem the post was meant generally, but I dont see how it becomes obviously false if it was. Arguably false, perhaps.

"Humans" is a term that represents all humans. Simple. It was not "Men generally...", it was "Men".

soo, if Im reading you right, you would consider it fase if it were said that humans have 2 legs, I gather, you'd allow only 'humans generally have 2 legs'?

Exactly. People who have had a leg amputated or perhaps not born with a leg are still humans. As the word "humans" is all-inclusive, it would be false to make general statements that refer to most humans, but to not qualify the difference with words like "most".

Thats what i was getting at with my "who do you think you are" post. I feel like he is being overcritical and simply playing word games.

Maybe i should just say that to you Fireworks.

ok I agree thats a more rigorous and precise way of expression, but I must point that this semantical interpretation of the claim 'humans have 2 legs' as fully all-encompassing and not just a general statement thats, mostly true, is not accepted by all, so is perhaps interpreting the posters statement wrongly: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Humans-Have-Legs-Alien-Asks/dp/1855615401

The statement stands for itself - that is why we use words with consensual meaning. If I proclaim that humans wear black sweaters, and there is a human being that does not wear black sweaters, then the statement "humans wear black sweaters" is false. If I were to ask "Do all humans have two legs?" then the answer is no. One doesn't reply back "No, I meant generally do humans have two legs?" because one would say that the first time.

It is not a matter of incorrectly interpreting the statement - it is a matter of the original poster failing to properly convey their intended meaning through improper use of language.

Re: Objectifying women [Re: aryah]

to contribute a thought by the late Baudrillard on the subject:

The modern, disenchanted interpretation of the body as something which cannot wait to be undressed and of sexuality as a desire which wants to be acted out and find pleasure is misconstrued. Cultures which privilege masks, veils, adornments affirm the opposite: the body is a metaphor. The genuine objects of desire and pleasure are the marks and signs that pull the body away from its nakedness, its naturalness, its "truth," and the entire reality of its physical presence. Everywhere seduction pulls objects away from their truths (including the truth about sexual value). When thought lifts its veil, it is not in order to be seen naked or to reveal a secret buried for a long time. Thought lifts its veil to reveal the body as a definite enigma, as a secret, a pure object whose mystery will never be solved and has no need to be discovered.

A meaning is a function of a context, and not fixed by the definition of a word or syntax of a sentence alone.
In any case one finds out that such definitions are rather unobtainable, as Wittgensteins examples with the meaning of the word 'game' , reducing it to mere family resemblences demonstrate.

I should also note that the meaning of 'generally' is not equivalent to 'mostly' or to 'some', it implies it being the case as a rule, in principle, so implying paradoxicly to this kind of formalistic thinking that something being true as a rule precisely means there are exeptions and yet is a valid generalization, for more than numbers.

I particularly fail to see why would it be banned to explan and correct ones expression further; what insight does one gain by such limitation but halting in awe by the obvious and rather irrelevant fact that someones expression was less than 100% exact, like such way of communicating would even be desirable in the first place...

As for claims like 'humans have two legs' I at least find them perfectly valid, and a quick google would show Im not the only one, even books seem to be published with such claims. If such communication methods fails to satisfy your requirements of valid sentences, and yet seem to function, Id suggest its not the sentences that are at fault but your insistance on such formalist criteria for validity of expressions

Yet it was unclear in the context outlined that it was not being intended as an absolute statement - thus the request for clarification on the matter!

It means that it is usually true, thus the term defines that there are exceptions. For example, "for the most part" is a phrased used to define the word "generally". When one is speaking in general terms, it is most effective to express that one is speaking in general terms. Simple.

What are you even talking about? This is what I said:

Quote:
Regardless, you aren't speaking for men and women as a whole, so you shouldn't create a false sense of doing so by neglecting to use words such as "some".

If one is interested in conveying one's point, it is benefical to accurately represent that point. I sought for the matter to be clarified and it was, by his subsequent use of the phrase "'some' humans". In fact, I'm now aware of the fact that he had already clarified that he was referring to "most" humans, so I'm not sure what you are ranting on about, as I sought clarification on the matter and he made a point of expressing that he was only referring to most humans. I could have paid more attention to what I was replying to, but both were interested in conveying and understanding the exact point, which means that your arguement isn't very apt, as people who are interested in getting to the heart of the matter will seek to use language effectively.

So you thought a rational human might suggest that not one single individual deviated from some, however precise description, of something as unpredictable as human behaviour?

Im not sure Id agree thats equivalent in this context, this implies existance of underlying cause to the generalisation than mere numbers, a rule. In particular in the case of humans with two legs, claiming most humans have two legs seems rather more like saying there are quadruped strains of humans. Which is why I would not think the original statement was made more precise by prefixing it with 'most' men - Id say it was made significantly less precise or even void of essential content.

no I was refering to this:

If I were to ask "Do all humans have two legs?" then the answer is no. One doesn't reply back "No, I meant generally do humans have two legs?" because one would say that the first time.

that left me a bit perplexed

Actually you claimed it false or at least inherently ambigous, not just unclear to you.
I mostly wished to comment on the mention of the role of media, but we got sidetracked on semantics.

Language is used more or less effectively in reading as well as in writing, for reading is just as creative an activity.
