This sounds reasonable too:

"Human nature is malleable, its qualities changing somewhat according to the natural and social environment. Moreover, humankind is not a closed system. We exist within a natural world that is, on the whole, "good," but that is subject to rare catastrophes. Perhaps the initial phases of civilization were humanity's traumatized response to overwhelming global cataclysms accompanying and following the end of the Pleistocene. Kingship and warfare may have originated as survival strategies. Then, perhaps civilization itself became a mechanism for re-traumatizing each new generation, thus preserving and regenerating its own psycho-social basis."

I am wondering if tribal societies truly needed harsh rules to keep their members in check. For one a lot of tribes do not have the notion of ‘I’ – they only use ‘we’. If a member of a tribe has a problem, the tribe has a problem and if the tribe has a problem, each individual of that tribe has one as well. The level of individualization is nowhere near to what we have in the west, where each individual sees his needs as primary and the needs of the society as secondary.

I believe the need for control and punishment-based laws is an invention of modern civilization. I’m not saying tribal societies did not punish their members when they broke some major taboo, but they certainly did not need a part of the population to be in constant armed control over the rest of the population, which is a situation we seem to take for normal here in the west (police and the military).

I don't think you get where I am coming from here. In idea conditions of plenty no strictness or punishment necessary. But if there is scarcity then there is competition for resources even within the group. Those who take more than their share are punished if they are the weakest also. The strongest use there position to gain security for themselves and maybe their offspring. See where this could lead? Once scarcity is over the old survival programs remain as patterns. Fear of famine becomes prime mover and laws and rulers are set in place. Powertripping starts in ernest.

I see your position now. Finally.

Although I still disagree.

First I doubt than an outside factor such as lack of food or other resources would be a cause of competition and further individualization within the group. I don’t think the tribal psyche operates in the same way as our western individualized psyche does. Maybe I’m mistaken, but it’s how I see it.

About the offspring. The funny thing is that inside of tribal groups members share sexual partners constantly and it is rarely known who the father of a certain child is. And they usually aren’t sensitive about it, since the children belong to and are raised by everyone in the tribe anyway.

I doubt any tribal-mind (uncivilized one) could comprehend that, let alone go through with it.

What about Rwanda, Sudan and Chad (Darfur), the Aztecs, Papuan Dani, or the endemic warfare practiced by "tribal-minded" societies?

the values of humanity do not have to be hammered into the next generation.

The values I had in mind and which I believe are forced upon a healthy individual are those of civilization and not of humanity. I too see basic human values ingrained, yet I do not see how a child would naturally embrace things like private property, hierarchy, environmental destruction, denial of natural impulses such as sexuality, etc. without some kind of force. That force is the traumatic impact civilization gives us to submit us to its rules.

I believe in fate. Not god as a controller kind of fate, but natural fate.

Everything that humanity has accomplished (religion, rules, even the holocaust) was supposed to happen.

Not because it was prewritten by "god",

But because everything society does stems from our own animal (buddha)nature.

There is individual consciousness, and then there it society consciousness. Society consciousness is not seperate from individual consciousness and individual consiousness is not spereate from society consiousness.

So blaming any problems on society and or governement is senseless.

Blaming is different than trying to understand something.

As to the rest of your post. I agree.

I never said that you specifically were trying to blame.
I can tell by your posts that you wouldnt do that.

But many idealistic people who think that there can one day be
complete peace and love throughout humanity tend to blame the
insititutions.

I've been reading some more articles on this topic and I was surprised to find out most of the authors and researchers agree with your view, Ice.

"According to DeMeo's (1998) thesis, some 6,000 years ago in the Saharasian region of the world, humanity experienced an overwhelming trauma, from which we never recovered. ... experienced a significant drought which "would have been a major, and probably the only major mechanism which would lead to famine and starvation, given the normally self-reliant condition of early peoples" (DeMeo, 1998, p. 78)...

In a haunting study of the Ik people in northeastern Africa, Colin Turnbull (1972) documented the devastating consequences when an entire group of people are ravaged by drought, famine, aggression, and forced displacement. "Under the stress to which this society was subject, all the trimmings were shed, everything that was not directly functional to the problem of [individual] survival was abandoned" (Turnbull, 1972, p. 178).

Human values such as trust, cooperation, commitment, affection, and empathy were no longer 'functional to the problem of survival' and were thus discarded in favor of a hyperindividualism that spelled the end to their traditional tribal ways (DeMeo, 1998; Turnbull, 1972)."

Survival of the fittest. Now I ask you. Where does love come into this? If we are based in love then how can things work this way? I still choose to believe love is prime mover and I have my reasons. What do you think?

The human is basically neutral in nature...we can be what we desire to be... Love, Icelander, I believe is an abstraction that was created by man...it is not an inborn emotion like fear...it was created and I feel that it is learned emotional behavior. That is what makes it so special...it is the result of our higher nature and it's ultimate expression.

A warrior is tuned to survive, and he survives in the best of all possible fashions." ― Carlos Castaneda
