Do shrooms help make that connection? Sometimes, they help me see a lot of things that I would otherwise miss.

Yes. They can be a very helpful catalyst for this type of change in perception, unlike modern human society.

My take on identity was that 'I' don't exist. Sure I exist as a body with a brain & a mind solely dependant on it.

The ego which I consider separate from the self is a set of programs, metaprograms. The ego is aware of being aware. The self is the dot of consciousness at the center of your being. The self is conscious. In the tripping mindstate the neurological & their attendant cognitive structures that project the ego become disrupted.

The mind confuses the egoic 'I' with the self, body & brain that are geniune. As far as the mind projects a 'you' - that is confused with the real you - you don't exist.

Our consciousness parses the 4d block universe to create our temporal perspective. Much like how a movie camera slices time into frames. Every frame compacts a non-zero interval of time into an instant. No measurement can be instantaneous in a reality that is a continuum.

If time is a continuum like -4 -3 -2 -1 0 +1 +2 +3 +4
Where 0 is now - when one second passes we subtract 1 & add one. Still at zero. How fast does time pass anyway? One second per second?

So all this comes down to two perspectives on the universe - The spatialized, temporal perspective on life that most people have & Einstein's atemporal block universe. Ego death is in part apprehending the frozen nature of space-time, realizing the illusory nature of the ego, the power the ego exerts - experienced as free will & dissolution of the self - creating the feeling of one-ness & nothing-ness.

What happens when you die or go to sleep depends on your perspective. From a temporal perspective you cease to exist. (You go back where you were before you were here - atemporal existence) From an atemporal perspective nothing changes. Consciousness & existence still go on. Consciousness doesn't have a memory & doesn't remember being you. (It does but only temporally & within a brain) Just as you don't remember being Hitler, Me, Cleopatra ect...This is where our sense of being a separate person comes from & also part of the feeling of mystical one-ness.

Death is not a concern once you've experienced ego death & realized the illusory nature of self & timelessness of time.

To quote a shroomery member who himself quotes Lao Tzus Tao Te Ching:

'If you die without loss you are eternal.'

The congenitally blind think their 'I' is in their fingertips when they read braille.

Hey,yea what better than my homebrew-worldview crackpot metaphysics for my first post.

Brew is the key word here.  The ego death theory I borrow from www.egodeath.com the rest is intuition, science, synthesized knowledge fro m life experiences & whatever I dream up at 2am while high.

I've only read Lilly's Metaprogramming the human biocomputer as it is available on online.

No doubt in another few months I'll have something even more bizarre dreampt up.  Mystery is the best part.

"What happens when you die or go to sleep depends on your perspective. From a temporal perspective you cease to exist. (You go back where you were before you were here - atemporal existence) From an atemporal perspective nothing changes. Consciousness & existence still go on. Consciousness doesn't have a memory & doesn't remember being you."

In my (ego) mind, if consciousness goes on without a memory and doesn't remember being me, then it truly isn't a consciousness.  It's an irrelevant "something" that exists eternally, and that I guess I can call "me" if I wanted to.  But it's the ego me that I care about.  Whether or not its illusionary, that's what I consider to be the "real" me.  If the ego goes away at my death, then I'm truly upset.  I couldn't care less if my consiousness continues to exist or not, for if it doesn't  remember the ego me, which is the only part of "me" that I care about, then "I" am lost forever.

"Death is not a concern once you've experienced ego death & realized the illusory nature of self & timelessness of time."

Well, once you're dead, if you don't remember your ego self, then I guess death wouldn't be a concern anymore.  But it's my ego self that I long to keep for eternity, not the eternal "consiousness" that can't even remember being "me".

Edit:  Mind you, my reply is just hypothetical, assuming that what you are saying is true.  Like I said previously, I don't believe anything about me is eternal, until I hear a convincing argument that it is.  All of the theories on these boards that I've read so far can never be proven (nor disproven).  So how can I determine which is the "real" theory (if any)?

Dude, i think you need to come to the deep spiritual understanding....................... that tripod doesnt allow remote image hosting.  Your "image hosted by Tripod" avatar is beautiful.  \=]

You can gotto 'edit profile' and upload an image for the shroomery to host for you.

And btw.
