Trauma of Civilization: Hey Truman, do you want to break free?
    #6271622 -

Dealing with my own trauma of childhood abuse I have come to a realization that we have been all traumatized (by our parents, teachers, priests) in one way or another :murder:  and that trauma is a necessary part of civilizing someone, because naturally maturing individual would otherwise never accept the ideals of modern civilization such as hierarchy, private property, the State, restraint of natural impulses, denied sexuality, environmental destruction, etc.

These concepts are so foreign to our core true self and our instinctual tribal nature that they must be forced upon our minds by the use of violence, toxic shame practices and even threats on our lives.

When an individual (usually as a child) is successfully integrated (traumatized) into a society his true self is suppressed and a foreign installation of the society (mind) takes over.
Now the individual is ready to obey the rules of the society, work as his told, when and what his told. If he by any chance starts to question the fundamental rules of the society, he encounters extreme anxiety that was imposed upon him during his traumatization and that serves to keep him in check. Those of you who have seen the film 'The Truman Show' know what I'm talking about here.

To find our way back to our true selves we must therefore be ready to face our most terrifying fears. We must be ready to move beyond the everyday programming of the society (media Matrix), pressure of our fellow human beings to stay as we are (usually shame based), societies laws (as when breaking the law with the use of psychotropic substances) and even the wrath of God (Ego projection of catholic god, also mentioned by Castaneda). We must be ready to look deep into our core wound, feel the pain, anger and terror that lies there and by doing so heal ourselves. And when we're done that, we must do our utmost best to relive the primitive ideas of kinship, solidarity, community, harmony with nature and fellow human beings and restore all other gifts that were given to us as our birth right and taken away with the trauma society 'blessed' us with.  :mushroom2:

Location: ON THE STAIRS

Yes!!

I love the scene when Truman has survived the storm, and he shouts to the sky "is that all you've got?? You're going to have to KILL ME!!"

Once we realize that an authentic life is the only life worth living, the threats become ineffective.

Yea, I simply loved that final scene too!  Freedom or death!

And even more so--REALITY or death.  He lives in a so-called Perfect World.  Everyone looks out for him, no one will harm him.  He is insulated from almost every human circumstantial problem, yet he finds this world flat and bland.

Even when it is revealed to him that this entire world revolves around him, that he is THE STAR, he chooses to leave for the risks and unknowns of the outside world.

:congrats:

This is such a terrific metaphor for relinquishing self-importance!  We want to believe that the world revolves around us, that all of our petty problems are fascinating, that our fate is a Universal concern.

Letting go of this self-importance, of starring in our own prime-time show, can feel like dying.  The death of THE STAR, exit stage right.

I think the Truman show is a great allegory for Gnosticism(appropriately enough, since it takes many ideas from Philip K. Dick's novel, Time Out of Joint). The hero leaves his false reality ruled by a false god(Demiurge) and gains knowledge(gnosis) of reality as it is.

Too some extent, I agree with you. (Especially concerning 'stigmas' such as drug use or sexuality.) On the other hand, some of our 'tribal instincts' have been repressed in order for us to live together in relative peace.

Also kind of reminds me of The Giver.

no?

There was nothing to fear and nothing to doubt

What do you believe those repressed instincts are? If you had in mind uncontrollable violence and savagery that is what I believe but a pure fabrication of a western mind.

In general I agree with your post. Here is where questions pop up for me though. If these concepts are "foreign" to our core then they would never have actualized. There must be a part of us that is these concepts also. I would guess back in our early days of survival needs. To say that we are not those instincts also IMO would be in error.

The concepts I’ve had in mind were things like hierarchy, private property, denied sexuality, environmental destruction, slavery and all other atrocities of modern civilization. In a way I would say Auschwitz and cold-blooded factory-type destruction of millions of fellow human beings serves as best example of what modern mind is capable. I doubt any tribal-mind (uncivilized one) could comprehend that, let alone go through with it.

What we have become is what any animal that was caught, traumatized and then put in a ZOO would have become. Hurt and capable of hurting. Maybe that behavior is not that foreign to her core, but I doubt it makes it natural.

What we have become is what any animal that was caught, traumatized and then put in a ZOO would have become.

This is my question. Why did we begin this process? It had to have a beginning where the first parents trumatized their offspring. Could it have been unintentional? Even if that were true it would still be a part of our makeup to act in unhealthy ways.

I'm trying to understand this.

The pursuit and maintenance of safety and security, along with the accompanying fear of failure in this pursuit, would seem to be justification enough for humans to force rules upon their offspring. Misguided love, fear of loss of those we love, the entangled mess created betwixt the two = traumatizing them "for their own good."

I am trying to understand this too. What or who started it and if it's truly part of our instinctual makeup.

McKenna in his Food of the Gods argues that it started 10.000 years ago with beginning of human agriculture practice, rise of civilization and our the abandonment of ego-dissolving rites. To quote;

"Terror of being was the placenta that accompanied the birth of Christianity, the ultimate cult of domination by the unconstrained male ego. The abandonment of the ego-dissolving rites of the visionary plants has allowed what began as an individually maladaptive style to become the guiding image of the entire social organism."

Castaneda (Don Juan) would say it started with the arrival of flyer creatures that took over our minds and who control us ever since.

I for one do not have an ultimate answer.

But I can still compare the last surviving tribes (such as Nuba people), their carefree way of being, loving each other, rising each others children, having no notion of private property and us, the civilized people. And when I see this is see something that's gone terribly wrong with us.

OK then, Beginning life in the fertile crescent. Lush valleys warm and nurturing, plenty of food for all.

Tribes pushed into less favorable habitat with population expansion. Then drought and scarcity. Then everything is critical and stern rules for survivals sake.

Something like this?

I’m not sure I get where you’re heading.

I don’t think population expansion happened before agriculture revolution started 10.000 years ago. Before that the size of a tribe was naturally regulated by the availability of food resources. Only with excess of available food did population begin to truly expand and hierarchy started to develop (due to some having more than others).

Where I am heading is the idea of harsh survival brings on harsh rules.

No one needs agriculture if there is a plentiful year round food supply as in certain lush climates and coastal areas. But with movement to dryer or colder areas then starvation is a threat. Things must be rationed everyone must do this and that. Punishment for eating too much etc. Just brainstorming here.

Then it would be inherent in us.?

I am wondering if tribal societies truly needed harsh rules to keep their members in check. For one a lot of tribes do not have the notion of ‘I’ – they only use ‘we’. If a member of a tribe has a problem, the tribe has a problem and if the tribe has a problem, each individual of that tribe has one as well. The level of individualization is nowhere near to what we have in the west, where each individual sees his needs as primary and the needs of the society as secondary.

I believe the need for control and punishment-based laws is an invention of modern civilization. I’m not saying tribal societies did not punish their members when they broke some major taboo, but they certainly did not need a part of the population to be in constant armed control over the rest of the population, which is a situation we seem to take for normal here in the west (police and the military).
