Wood loving species question.
    #384646 - 09/03/01 01:36 PM (23 years, 1 month ago)

When growing a wood loving species such as one that likes alder or maple is it ok for one to use wood chips that are used for smoking of foods etc or do they have other things added for the smoking, the ones I'm thinking of can be found at http://www.sookehills.com/ thanks for any info.

Yes thy can be used, this is clean wood without any additives. I use this for making spawn for wood loving species.
It will get a bit expansive if you atempt to make a whole outdoor patch with these chips though.

i and my friends have not had as good of luck using pine or any other species of wood that has a pungent oder. most of these contain compounds called terpenoids, among them terpentine. these compounds do not promote mushrooms.

often in the pet stores one can find shredded or chipped aspen in large bags, or the companies that produce the other woods also make the aspen chips. they are for people who are sensitive to the terpenoids, and can be specil ordered.

in my home town, aspen animal bedding is available at Fred Meyer.

Try using a species that occurs in Pine forests like Psilocybe subaeruginosa or an Australian cyanescens from that habitat......

The stuff you get in pet shops is very fine. You want some chunky substrate, or at least a mix of primarily woodchips and a small amount of the finer stuff.
