Aspen a substrate for Ps. cyanescens?
    #449385 - 11/06/01 09:03 PM (15 years, 1 month ago)

I was just wandering the aisles at my local Petco, and found bags of "Pelletized Aspen". Anyone have any idea if Psilocybe Cyanescens would colonize and fruit on aspen?

It's worth a try but I'd rather go for the alder chips in the bbq section...aisle 5 I believe...

aspen is good

I would use shavings instead of pellets with maybe a bit of birdseed for nutrients and some vermiculite for moisture.

fruiting has to do with temperature; around 50 I think

Aspen is good to start mycelium growth because contaminants dont take to it. Species that are not woodloving will also grow on aspen.

Ha ha, I was wondering the exact same question. Except it was in Fred Meyer, a compressed bail of aspen shavings for animal bedding. Claims to be dust free. Looks good for expansion, might want to add some larger chips before planting.

Cedar is not a good substrate for wood loving species, AFAIK.

I agree cedar isnt recomended. I think it might be the oil in it. Wood that smells strong as far as I know is not ideal for mushrooms.
