Masters frequently demonstrate, as i said before have you seen the shao lin monks, or the tv prgoram "Mind Body And Kick Ass Moves" Many masters demonstrate on that show to promote martial arts and encourge more people to practice

One show had a master draggin a 7 ton truck with a rope tied to his penis along a staight road. Another demonstrated by ringing a huge bell with his chi force!

Their are people who want to be good fighters. "the best in the world" Bruce lee once said. And of course they can develop good fighting skills. Of course i dont profess to knowing all martial artists, but i can comment from my own experinces from meeting such competetavive people. This is where i draw my comments and judgements from.

If one truley develops internal qi force, the one well placed punch should be sufficient to kill a person or at least serverly injure them. This is why i say that masters generally do not fight!

Its true that in exoteric martial arts such as karate many master end up with bad knees and spines through over training and conditioning. But their chi-force is still strong, as is my fathers. He demonstrates sometimes to introduce his students to qi by putting them in a standing absorbing posture and connecting his qi force with theirs and creating a sort of magnetic feild of condensed chi between their hands that they can play with. After that they are encouraged to develop and recognise their own qi force by themselves. I have experience of this!

I see. There is no ego involved in that useless demonstration.

I couldnt say, as to what his intentions were, maybe it was to prove the existence of qi, and to inspire others with his supernatural penis

His motivations for such a stunt illude me! But it was a sound demonstration for unbelievers.

Yet, you said you knew what the intentions of masters were.

But it was a sound demonstration for unbelievers.
So, now you (like so many before) want to have it both ways. They are too ego-free to demonstate thier powers, but here is a demonstration anyway.

More impressive and convincing would be a 70 y.o. master winning the UFC.

I believe there are some proven experiments of Qi (Chi) force being used for healing at distances of up to 10,000 miles. I know I know, my bad for not having the link right now(not on this computer). Until I find it, go ahead and discount my input if you want. I got the link from a recent thread on this forum though, so someone else might have it. ? Hope so. I will look when I get back to my regular computer, almost sure I have it saved in favorites =). Good chi to all, I'm going to get some good chai.

Jumped in a river, what did I see?
Black eyed angels swimming with me
Moon full of stars and astral cars, all the figures I used to see
All my lovers were there with me
All my past and all my futures
We went to heaven in a little rowboat
There was nothing to fear and nothing to doubt

I have a friend who is a martial arts instructor, but he is also a staunch Southern Baptist. I asked him about Qi. He believed in it's existance, but said that it was nothing mystical, but merely the energy we use for day to day life. He said that physical training and proper diet combined with strength of willpower allowed one to use it more efficiently than the average person. He said this force was accumulated by storing the energy we get from food and sunshine by using training and excercise. I personally saw him shatter cinder blocks with ease and once held 3 2x4s together while he punched them into. I did not feel the force of the blow...the boards just came apart. Minutes later a less experienced man tried to break 2 2x4s I was holding and did not succeed, but he injured his hand...the blow nearly knocked me down. This "master" did not claim to be without ego.

the martial arts world would be dominated by old masters

It is!

Brute force, speed, endurance, aggressiveness and technique rule the day in the UFC

But high level masters don't compete in that tournament, so what can you prove about qi with that statement? The idea of using your passion, your art that you've spent a lifetime perfecting to make some quick cash by clobbering people in front of a screaming crowd of drunken Americans isn't appealing to everyone. The highest level martial artist I've met (excluding his teacher) teaches for next to nothing. The local morons teaching fake tai chi at the community center charge more than he does. It may be hard to imagine if you've never encountered it, but there are people in the world who aren't interested in money beyond what they need for a rented roof and a diet heavy in whole grains and vegetables. Of course, the flip side of that is:

Meet chainsaw. He earned that nickname by taking on all comers through a career as a wild ring fighter in Shanghai. He's in his fifties and he's the toughest guy in the city. The cool thing is that his nick communicates the ferocity of his fighting ability but is also a pretty neat metaphor explaining a principle in the martial art he practices. He was on the cover of the most recent Tai Chi Magazine (unless a new one just came out).

His name is Qian Shao Hong, and he'll take any challenge any time. Next time he comes to the USA, I'll let you know, Swami. I'll wager $10 000 that after testing his skills (you don't necessarily have to challenge him to a full-on fight), you'll understand that, after taking into account the mastery found in the broader martial arts community, the people competing in the UFC aren't anywhere near the top, and you won't even have to test one of them to compare and then think about it. It will be apparent immediately. That's my wager, and all I'm going to say on the matter.

Only three major debating errors in this statement. Who can spot them?

But high level masters don't compete in that tournament...
Standard tautology. You are another one who knows the mindset of all martial artists, eh? They don't compete because they would get their ass whipped.

Meet chainsaw.
You are making the EXACT same argument as the other poster. Old masters don't compete in full-on combat, but here is one who does.

Yes he could give me, an untrained fighter, quite a lesson as I could give him on the racquetball court. So what?

does the following sentence contain the same 3 errors?

"the idea isn't appealing to everyone"

No you don't have to fight him in a full-on battle, you just have to get a hands on of his skills. Feel his power and other things. Any other things you need cleared up about this bet before you accept it?

And this particular discussion is over other than clarifying the terms of our bet.

How do you know whether there was ego involved? Somebody could appear on a stage and dance the tango with a feather up their ass playing smoke on the water on a kazoo and still do it without any ego.

Why is it a useless demonstration? The guy was merely demonstrating his belief that using chi that he spends his life cultivating he is able to perform feats that most people wouldnt have a hope in hell of performing.

Perhaps its your ego the leads you to see ego in the actions of others?

I don't think anyone who was lacking an ego would feel compelled to ever do that.

why do people say stuff like "you're missing the point" and then not explain what they think the point is?

is it so that they can derive satisfaction when I meekly sink to my knees before them and softly ask "what IS the Point?"

if so this I humbly do. what is your point?

Didnt mean to offend you old chap!

The simple point I was making is that a persons actions dont always indicate the state of their ego.

Having actually seen the footage of the demonstration Swami was commenting on I would say the man seemed happy to demonstrate but did not seem to be consumed by ego.

All this ego shit is such a mish mash of bollox and differing concepts anyway that its hard to have a sensible discussion on the subject. As far as "I" am concerned the word has been obsolete since the 60's!

yeh, I agree the word has so many meanings that it has no meaning at all. it has broken into sub-words and sub-meanings. it needs to be retired.
