Re: Neija (internal) martial arts.. any practitioniers? [Re: Squatting_Otter]

The whole debate about external arts and internal - internal arts are ones that originated in China and external are ones that originated outside of China. Nothing more, nothing less.

hehehe nope. You got that completely wrong. shaolin longfist, one of the oldest styles of chinese martial arts is external. As are thousands of other styles, also chinese, that I won't bother listing.

Where'd you get that painfully eroneous information?

there are internal arts in other cultures. i think internal arts were actually created in india and then brought to china where they were perfected. someone feel free to correct me if i'm wrong. i know there are various very wierd forms of internal arts floating around all over the place.

It is theorized that qi gong originated from an Indian Buddhist priest visiting the shaolin temple. He saw that the monks were fat and unhealthy and as a result were falling asleep during meditation and generally not being buddhists, so he went into a cave for a few years and invented muscle/tendon change qi gong. It was later that the monks started developing martial arts.

This is probably what you are referring to. Chinese medical theory bas been around a lot longer than the shaolin temple, so I speculate that people were doing qi gong before this story, but maybe this is where the physical aspect of the shaolin monks' training came into the picture, and that's why this is a well known story.

We may be getting our terms confused. The "internal" martial arts that you refer to may not be "internal" as I'm defining it here. As I'm using the term "internal martial arts" I'm refering to the four main schools of chinese internal martial arts: Xing yi quan, taiji quan, bagua zhang, and liu he ba fa. These share common characteristics that aren't found in arts outside of China and the commonly accepted term to differentiate them from all other systems is "internal."

I've personally never heard of any country other than China developing martial arts anyone would call internal. I'm curious. Do you have some information on that subject handy?

bump :nyan:

Aikido and Daito Ryu Aikijutsu were internal Japanese arts. There's at least two karate guys in Japan who use internal skills.

also, in my own very limited experiance external arts are useless compared to internal arts, since a person can develope internal power that is infinitely greater than a persons ability to develope external power.

I suggest you gain some more experience if you really believe this.

my girlfriends father is a tae kwon do master, and i'm sure that any form of martial art has both an inward as well as outward focus.  otherwise a master wouldn't be a true master, because it is with the discipline of the self that these arts offer you benefits, and to ignore the inward or the outward would not be a proper study in the first place.

i personally practice yoga, which has 8 limbs of practice that go beyond simply forms/positions.

my dad is interested in qi gong, but i'll try anything that involves breath control in general.
