Spirtiual purposes ?
I'm thinking of taking classes as a means of

Not at this time. I have been rereading a really cool book though on the subject. It merges spirituality/philosophy with martial arts. It's called "The Unfettered Mind; Writings of the Zen Master to the Sword Master" and was written by Takuan Soho, Zen master and counselor to shoguns and emperors, in the 1500's.

You, Shroomism, and others who enjoy the martial arts would love this small book. Everything is written using the metaphor of a sword. Even the style and wording of the book itself is quick, precise, and efficient.

Here's a little excerpt for ya:

SEVER THE EDGE BETWEEN BEFORE AND AFTER:

Not ridding the mind of previous moments, allowing traces of the present mind to remain- both are bad. This means one should cut right through the interval between previous and present. Its significance is in cutting off the edge between before and after, between now and then. It means not detaining the mind.

Tai Chi is not only an advanced martial art but a very intense meditation.

Qigong is intense, to say the least, and focuses primarily on cleansing the mind, body and spirit. It is a total unit, that works to harmonize the energy (chi) of the body as a whole.. it takes great discipline, but the effects are well worth the time and effort.

I have heard of The Unfettered Mind.. and have been meaning to check it out.. thanks for reminding me.

Also worth checking out are the philosophies of Jeet Kune Do, which for those who do not know, is the martial art Bruce Lee developed. The entire concept is formlessness, to remain flexible and adaptable, as to not limit yourself to any one particular style, technique, or thought process, and use whatever will help you in the present. Be formless, like water.

This is the real deal:

Bruce Lee sucked. He just said and wrote a lot of shit that hadn't been translated to the west and passed it off as his own. Remember he was an actor long before a martial artist. And besides, he's soooooo.. yesterday.

bruce lee was a great actor. he really was. i love his movies.

having said i fully agree that learning a martial art will help one spiritually. becoming good at anything that requires thought and discipline will have the same effect - you will know yourself better. but getting fit and being able to defend yourself at the same time sweetens the deal.

Shaolin kung fu was originally used to develope the spirit, before it was advanced for fighting purposes.

chi kung is spiritual and also incredibly good for the body.

Didnt bruce lee just steal another martial art and add some pointless features like high kicks?

btw shroomism you chinese or something?

Bruce Lee in his early teen years, found a very famous Wing Chun instructor named Yip Man. He trained with him for some years, and became his best student. Bruce lee then started to act. He came over to America, and started to mix fencing, boxing, and other martial arts into his own personal style. In my opinion he is the greatest martial artist of all time. There was a match set up between him and a very famous chinese martial artist. The chinese masters were mad that bruce was teaching the westerners their style of martial arts. Bruce Lee chased this martial arist around the room until he finally pinned him down, and the guy admitted defeat. Please dont ever call him an actor. He is a serious philosopher and martial artist.
Edit: Jesus, I had to add. How could you possibly say he wrote a bunch of stuff and passed it off as his own. It WAS his own. Do you have any idea of the martial arts culture in China? You trained with your master, he was your father. Sifu can be translated to father, sifu being your master. Bruce Lee said reject what is crappy, take what is useful. Now in the Tao of Jeet Kune Do he does take things from various boxing and fencing books. But this is because he is taking what is useful. Read his commentaries on the martial way.

What ^^^^^ said

Bruce Lee did not suck, he was an amazing martial artist, philosopher, AND actor. Sure perhaps his philosophies were influenced by others, but isn't that the way it works? He brought it to american culture who would otherwise probably have never heard anything similar. He did not just regurgitate old ideas.. he incorporated his own ideas into it tried and true methods. He was revolutionary in martial arts, and the UFC and Pride would probably not exist today if it were not for him.. he was the pioneer. I mean come on man.. Jeet fucking Kune Do.

I don't know about all time, but what Albert Einstein was to science, Bruce Lee was to martial arts. The man was amazing.

shaolin temple was made in about 1979, well after bruce lee was gone.
tho if you wanna get into it. jet li (li lianjie) won the martial arts championship of china, every year, from when he was 13 til 18.

bruce lee only ever entered one full contact competition, lost, and spent the next 6 months in a wheelchair.
he was a great actor .
all the cool pics in shroomism post are from movies ...y'know - fantasy, image, hype. he's not really fighting those people.
bruce lee made the best noises tho, can't dispute that.

jet li ragged his knees by using wushu style moves. he had to have the cartilage in both kneecaps replaced from weak stancework and kicks.

Martial arts competitions often seemed to be graded on the appearance of the performance which leads wushu practioners to win(yes i know wushu means martial art in chinese, but not in english)

UFC is queer btw

How exactly, is UFC 'queer'? Full contact, no-holds-barred, mixed martial arts/submission wrestling is not "queer". Who wins is not based on the appearance of performance, it's whoever submits the other person (ie..tapping out) or simply beats the living crap out of them.

I'd like to see you get in the octagon with Randy Courtre, Vitor Belfort, or one of the Gracies. Yeah.. and what about Pride? Is that queer too?  :shake:

"1958 (Age 18): - Bruce enters the 1958 Boxing Championships and defeats the reigning three year champion, Gary Elms."
Honestly I have no clue what you are talking about when you said he entered a competition and lost. He was in Ed Parkers kenpo tournament thing, but there was no real fighting there, it was to show off moves. He first showed off his one inch punch there.

I still say he was the greatest ever. And I say this because, most earlier martial artists were limited by their style, he was not.

"1970 (Age 30): Los Angeles - Bruce injures his sacral nerve and experiences severe muscle spasms in his back while training. Doctors told him that he would never kick again. During the months of recovery he starts to document his training methods and his philosophy of Jeet Kune Do. Later after his death, The Tao of Jeet Kune Do is published by his wife in memory of Bruce Lee. "
This is what you were talking about, however he injured it training. Bruce Lee ran a legitimate martial arts school for many years. People such as Dan Inosanto, Chuck Norris, Kareem Abdul Jabar attended. I doubt you know who dan inosanto is, but he is an extremely famous martial artist. So please actually learn about Bruce before you bash him. Jet Li is well...a good martial artist in some ways. I believe he studied in the chinese opera and learned martial arts that way. Bruce Lee learned it from the most famous Wing Chun instructor, on the streets of China, to protect his own life.

Yes.. Bruce didn't claim one style.. he used whatever was most efficient. Adaptable, and that was his greatest advantage. Mixed martial arts? That was Bruce's idea.

i suggest checking out aikido. but a lot of teachers dont know what aikido is really about. it's about feeling forces, and understanding how to manipulate them, exerting a minimal amount of your own force. you need a good understanding of anatomy and physics to be a great aikido master. My Sensei is a fuckin genius, lol, but i don't think most are as good as him

The person that taught me Thai boxing was told by doctors on three seperate occasions that he would never walk again. (Broken Knee, etc). At 35 years old, he fought for the world championship, but lost. He was ranked 6th in the world at the time. The fight was voted the best fight of the year in Japan. With a strong soul, the ability for the body to heal itself is limited only by the mind.

I would disagree with that statement immensely. Steven Hawking has a wonderful mind, not so wonderful a body. Many gang members have marvelously fit bodies, however their souls need some work.

Re: Martial Arts for Spirtual poiposes... [Re: TheCow]

I agree with Seuss.. but perhaps he could have worded it differently. Body, mind and soul are part of a unit. Our physical earthly experience. They should be in harmony with each other, but this is not always the case. Especially in a society where we are taught to seperate emotions from work..logic.. etc.. where physical appearance is often seen as more important than soulwork.. etc.. this unit can become off balance.

But there is more to it than just having the trilogy in perfect harmony. Sure, that is the goal..but to get there we must learn. We learn by making mistakes, by experiencing..
Someone such as Steven Hawking, who can barely use his body, had to overcome that somehow. Perhaps this contributed to his massive development of mind, in fact I'm pretty sure it did. Where you will hear about blind people having all of their other senses heightened, the same situation applies here.

Mind, body, and spirit are indeed connected, though that may not be outwardly apparent to our conscious. There are many levels of life experiences occuring, and we are all on seperate, yet parallel and intertwining paths of evolution. To explain each situation would require detailed analysis of that particular entities mind/body/spirit complex.

The end result is that they will become balanced and harmonized eventually. That process is achieved through experience and learning. Even if your body does not work 'right', or your soul is in desperate need of help.. does not mean that the connection is not there. You are still a spiritual being incarnate into physical matter, and your body is still working to keep you on the physical plane..something must be working.

There are many factors involved which would require an entire book to explain. But suffice it to say that we all have those three things, and the goal of putting them all into balance with each other, regardless of limitations.. is a fine and noble human objective.
