Anybody know what God is like?
    #3430895 - 12/01/04 12:36 AM (19 years, 3 months ago)

I've certainly never experienced 'God'. I'm not sure if I even believe in God in the sense of a personal, benevolant and omniscient consciousness, but some people claim to have experienced him. What is he like? Is he cold and mechanical? Loving and accepting? Dreamy and distant? What is it like to see/feel God?

So we're not talking about God based on what the bible says about Him, right?

We're talking about God as we "feel" Him in our lives, if we feel Him at all, of course.

If I close my eyes and imagine God, and interpret the feelings I perceive upon imagining Him, here is what I come up with:

He loves me (us), He's strong, He's paternal, He wants the best for us, He's not afraid to use "tough love", and sometimes He cries.

IF you're asking how he's like in physical terms, first I would answer that God is everything that exists. Then I would wonder about the Source of God, and I'd say that it is located in the middle of the universe (if their is one) and that it is probaly a huge sphere of loving light in the form of a dark hole and maybe in a dimension that is impossible for us to perceive. It could also look like Solaris, if you've ever seen that movie. Just a big ball of energy of consciousness.

What do YOU think he looks like?

I've "seen" God before, but I can't describe him/her/it using words. It's something you'd just have to experience yourself.

The God I know is obviously God with omniscience/potence/etc. From what I experience it's love, "tough love" as Frog says, an incredible amount of patience with all of the stupid shit I do, even when I don't think about doing something wrong I always get this strong sense of "pain"/dissaproval maybe? If you draw close to God he will draw close to you if you have faith in Jesus. (Not to preach or condemn but this is aa truth in my life). When I lose faith God comes up with something to strengthen it. He never leaves me.... God is a personal God that I actually know/experience.

There is no god in the sense of a cosmic father or mother who will provide all things to their children. Nor is there some heavenly bureaucracy to petition. These models are not descriptions of a divine order, but are projections from archetypal templates. If we believe in the divine as cosmic family, we relegate ourselves to perpetual adolescence. If we regard the divine as supreme government, we are forever victims of unfathomable officialdom.

Those who follow Tao declare that there is no evidence that a god created our world. They have not found any empirical proof, and they cannot accept the idea philosophically. They reason that god must be absolute and this means oneness, omnipotence, omniscience, and omnipresence. Naturally, anything separate and distinct would not satisfy this criterion. If there was a god and a world that god created, then there would be two things ? and god could not then be considered absolute. If there were an absolute god, there could not be anything separate from god.

Everything is god. We are also god. However, we fail to realize this. Why? Because we look for god outside of ourselves. We make the mistake of taking ourselves as the viewer and then seek god as the object of our examinations. Unfortunately, everything we perceive is tainted by our subjectivity, and anything that we define as god ?out there? cannot be god because it is not absolute. All you?ve found is something that exists in relation to your perceptions.

You are god. The only way to confirm this is to remove the barrier of subjectivity that prevents you from realizing your essential oneness with all things.

?Who is God? I can think of no better answer than, He who is. Nothing is more appropriate to the eternity which God is. If you call God good, or great, or blessed, or wise or anything else of this sort, it is included in these words, namely, He is.? ? St. Bernard.

The Universal-Mind, or ?No-Mind? as it is called in the East [Zen], is the centered state of Being that lies within the middle-way of all that is. I am, This is, He/She is. All these are existent prior to all subjective mind-made labels, ideologies, and dualities. This is the Mind of God that has primacy to all that exists subjectively. It is essentially nothing, and yet paradoxically, at the same time it is infinity&totality... The Infinite Mind of God.

We can understand something of what lies beyond our experience by considering analogous cases lying within our experience.

The ground in which the multifarious and time-bound psyche is rooted is a simple, timeless awareness. By making ourselves pure in heart and poor in egoic-spirit we can discover and be identified with this awareness. In the spirit we not only have, but are, the unitive knowledge of the divine Ground.

Analogously, God in time is grounded in the eternal Now of the modeless Godhead. It is in the Godhead that things, lives and minds have their being; it is through God that they have their becoming ? a becoming whose goal and purpose is to return to the eternity of the Ground.

In teachings such as Meister Eckhart?s, God is equated with nothing? And in a certain sense the equation is exact; for God is certainly no thing. God is not a what; He is a That. In other words, the Ground can be denoted as being there, but not defined as having qualities. This means that discursive knowledge about the Ground is not merely, like all inferential knowledge, a thing at one remove, or even at several removes, from the reality of immediate acquaintance; it is and, because of the very nature of our language and our standard patterns of thought, it must be, paradoxical knowledge. Direct knowledge of the Ground cannot be had except by union, and union can be achieved only by annihilation of the self-regarding ego, which is the barrier separating the ?thou? from the ?That.?

Nice post Skorpivo. What my definition of God is the personal (as opposed to impersonal) manifestation of the supreme consciousness.
My question was regarding the experience of this God-mind in a way that is not impersonal or removed. I feel like I have experienced Oneness, but not God as people describe it. My most transendental moments have all felt very impersonal and empty. Rather than unconditional love and total union it's like silent and Zen, like a stone, inanimate object or a machine. Me, or whatever I am seems trivial and insignificant to it.

We talk about ourselves and everything being God, but not every moment is the God experience. If God is everything including myself I see it all the time, and I am not that impressed by it. Then again, mundane minds percieve mundane realities.

I would very much like to experience God the way some people can. Like some endless sea of infinite knowledge, bliss and acceptance. Maybe I just don't have the 'God Gene'.

The Perfect Way knows no difficulties,
Except that it refuses to make preferences.
Only when freed from hate and love
Does it reveal itself fully and without disguise.

A tenth of an inch?s difference,
And heaven and earth are set apart.
If you wish to see it before your own eyes,
Have no fixed thoughts either for or against it.

To set up what you like against what you dislike ?
This is the disease of the mind.
When the deep meaning of the Way is not understood,
Peace of mind is disturbed to no purpose. . . .

Pursue not the outer entanglements,
Dwell not in the inner void;
Be serene in the oneness of all things,
And dualism vanishes of itself.

When you strive to gain quiescence by stopping motion,
The quiescence so gained is ever in motion.
So long as you tarry in such dualism,
How can you realize oneness?

And when oneness is not thoroughly grasped,
Loss is sustained in two ways:
The denying of external reality is the assertion of it,
And the assertion of Emptiness [the Absolute] is the
denying of it. . . .

Transformations going on in the empty world that confronts us
Appear to be real because of Ignorance.
Do not strive to seek after the True,
Only cease to cherish opinions.

The two exist because of the One;
But hold not even to this One.
When a mind is not disturbed,
The ten thousand things offer no offence. . . .

If an eye never falls asleep,
All dreams will cease of themselves;
If the Mind retains its absoluteness,
The ten thousand things are of one substance.

When the deep mystery of one Suchness is fathomed,
All of a sudden we forget the external entanglements;
When the ten thousand things are viewed in their oneness,
We return to the origin and remain where we have always been. . . .

One in all,
All in one ?
If only this is realized,
No more worry about not being perfect!

When mind and each believing mind are not divided,
And undivided are each believing mind and Mind,
This is where words fail,
For it is not of the past, present or future.

~The Third Patriarch of Zen

If you really want to know what God is like without seeking him.

Then get a Dog and kick it in the face. Then when it comes back and still wants to love you.

You'll know what God is like

but, he is 1,000 times more than that

After that you will need a serious Prayer life and spent time everyday seeking him.

Despite what people say God is as real as a tree in the yard and is very much a father type being. He has a face and he has real gifts to give you

What's it like to experience God, you ask? I can't really answer that question, I don't think anyone can tell you what it's like before you experience it for yourself. In my ++++ experiences where I've felt God, all I can really tell you is that I felt that the purpose of my entire life was just to Experience that one moment. True bliss.
