I never read 'City of God,' but I did read his 'Confessions' when I was in seminary. I tried to relate to Augustine when I was trying to remain celibate for a year or two at a time, but I came to dislike his profound influence on the early Catholic Church. I was a NeoPlatonist in college and Plotinus went along well with Indian Yoga and psychedelics, but the former playboy Augustine who had a Mother-Complex and became virulently anti-sexual did the world a world of harm. I also read his two volumes on 'The Trinity,' after all, what else is a celibate monk gonna do to take his mind off of sex but focus on an intellectual discourse on a transcendental Mystery that no human can know, let alone describe? I also could relate to his ten years as a Manichean Gnostic - very much like the Jungians that I was trying to become through analysis and trainings - a lot of money and promises, but finally discouraged and disappointed as he was. I guess Martin Luther, an Augustinian monk, helped turn things back around when it came to sexual behavior (of course Luther failed in other domains like his antisemitism).

Christianity has to go back to the origins. These guys did nothing but harm. The original message still remains occulted and buried in writings deemed heretical.

St. Augustine had his fun, then changed his ways and told everyone not to have fun.
