To be fair, the tek I read on agar prep didn't specify cracking the lid on the bottle, I didn't really realize how potentially dangerous it was. Glad nothing went wrong, def a stupid moment on my part.

I'm just glad the bottle didn't crack and spill all over the inside of the PC. Was very careful when I removed the bottle and loosened it. Spraying molten jello was exactly my concern upon the quarter turn.

No, I am definitely not in favor of turning a hobby into medieval torture. Take care of your hands — having skin transplanted from your butt onto your hands will make you feel weird every time you touch your face. :uhoh:

I don't like messing with pressure, even though I've been refilling spray cans with custom makeup mixtures for years, ever since the company I used to buy from stopped making a specific shade. Then I recharge them with isobutane... and I assure you I calculate everything obsessively. Having an aerosol can explode in your face is unacceptable.

And for God's sake — why don't you peel the labels off your SABs and Tubs? It drives me crazy every time I see it. :lol:

I used to crank my bottle lids too.  Finally had an issue.  Lid poppped in the pc which meant the whole bottle was pretty much a loss.


For tax, i confess that i dont load my pc up with ten jars anymore... pretty sure i was getting some bad jars on the bottom layer because steam couldnt get at the whole jar. 

Been using a jacked up trivet now and running seven jars max.  No issues.

This is why the old school method involved modification with a filter lid. Not only do you risk a flash boil over but you risk sucking non-sterile air into your bottle. The flash boil occurs when the bottle pulls a slight vacuum with the cracked down plastic lid; once you crack open the lid you release the vacuum causing air to slip into the bottle. Crack the lid 1/4 turn to prevent a vacuum, the threads act as a barrier/filter, or just add a filter; both prevent vacuum.

Vacuum as a contamination vector also applies to LC. If your unmodified media bottle pulls a vacuum you may be pulling non-sterile material into your bottle when you open it.
