It is interesting to see the difference in bluing between grains, wheat seems the darkest.

The substrate is approximately 89% coir and 11% sheep manure and humate pallets.

The pallets are made into a slurry by adding 1 part water to every 2 parts pallets.

To make the slurry, I heat the mix of pallets and water in my IP on the keep warm setting, the keep warm setting helps break the pellets down into a slurry faster but should not raise the temperature higher than pasturisation temperatures perserving beneficial bacteria, the slurry is added to coir and for ever 1 part sheep pallets (Not slurry, the volume of pallets used to make the slurry) I add 2 parts coir, and then this mix is pasturised.

Be aware that you will need to use under field capacity coir in your slurry/coir mix or when you S2B to soak up the additional moisture added by the slurry and ideally the slurry/coir mix should be aged for about a week to allow for the beneficial bacteria to grow before you use it in bulk.

(I age the pasturised substrate in a bucket with the lid pushed down on only one side, it needs some FAE, you don't want to seal it in the bucket or bad bacteria will bloom)

I always keep my coir under capacity in buckets because it's easier to add some water to coir than squeezing water out and for some species they prefer under capacity coir anyway.

Pic tax, the grow area, a whole lot of nothing happening:

That was what I thought when I saw them too! I don’t know what it takes to get them to be like this instead of how they usually present. x7x+

The blue is normal (for my cultures) after shaking, the whole jar was deep blue/blackish looking the next day, and the myc will slowly turn white as it recovers......These are much darker looking in person...but are good And had great runs.

Are you saying this jar is not moldy?

Why are your cultures blue / black? I've never seen that.

What grain are you using, and what species are you growing?

Semperviva/subtropicalis...

The myc is Active. And bruises dark after shaking.

Yes that jar is good, it had started recovering, and eventually would have been completely white (again).

Semps, ime, pin quicker if let to consolidate for a couple weeks before spawning.

Mostly wheat...

they don't turn as blue with millet.
As you can see the agar and individual pieces of mycelium are darkened, but the hard shell of millet resists.

I started reading about that, that's a new development since I last dabbled here a year ago. Still unclear on the distinction, ochra can mate with cubes as they are more closely related, but I'm still not sure on the phenotypic differences and identifying characteristics.

Someone told me that ochra (Psilocybe ochraceocentrata) what everyone was actually growing for the past few years who thought they were growing Psilocybe natalensis (Nats)

And actual Nats make stones and don't look like what everyone called Nats, and aren't extremely robust like ochras (the artist formerly known as Nats)

Looks like the long running Nat thread has changed the thread name to reflect this:

Alan Rockafeller want to chime in? Did you get a mislabeled sample from someone and do genetic testing on one thinking it was the other?

Pic tax, plates I grew in 2021 that I thought were nats but were probably ochra. I never grew them out, got busy with only growing x7x, and eventually only x7x+, but these plates look interesting. Plates are on activated charcoal agar but you can hardly see the black.

Nice plates!

Most ochra for me overlay heavily.

The ochraceocentrata mean the center of caps will be ochra  colored.

So caps that aren't all one color is a good distinctive trait.

The way those are growing is classic ochra, I knew that's what was in there before reading "Nats".
Also, but not always, veil remnants will not remain on stipe but partially on cap edges.

Nats will be fatter at the base, have solid colored cap... idk I have not grown the "real" Nats. Have yet to be persuaded they are worth it.

Is anyone here growing real Nats?

Anyone have a link to pix?

I can't find it with a search because there are 5 years of Ochras mislabeled as Nats. haha.
