I am very new to growing mushrooms, and I have a million questions but it seems my next step is agar.

I am planning to follow BOD's agar TEK and am wondering if this is still best practice?

Also how thick (deep) do you pour your plates for isolation?

I just pour enough to cover the surface of the bottom of the plate.  I am not too worried about thickness.

Welcome.

I pour plates about 1/8 inch, maybe a little more. It can be from that to a quarter inch and still be fine. I do a quarter inch when I'm storing plates with mycelium in the fridge long term. Sometimes I'll pour plates 1/8 inch thick but pour the last few 1/4 inch to use up the agar I have.

It barely matters since most of what you're doing with agar is basically 2D.

I'd skip Bod's 9 year old tek, it's got the old wrong "sectors" b.s.
If do that you'll spend hours chasing something you don't need to.

It's a great Tek and bod outlines over and over that worrying about sectors isn't worth it in that 9 year old Tek so don't worry about it follow bods Tek and you'll see success

Many people get overly concerned with finding an isolate. Many isolates suck.
any two spores that successfully mate make a strain.

thus with spores on a petri dish


so you see a clone has proven it's potential by growing, with isolates your going blind you need to test every isolate, some will suck
here's a good example

Also a lot of noobs worry about rhizomorphic growth. Worry about healthy growth. you do not know if rhizomorphic growth will be any good till you test it. so tomentose growth may be a better fruiter or more potent, you won't know so don't concentrate on only rhizomorphic mycelium on dishes

That's literally everything he says about strain isolation maybe try show some respect out here before running around flinging shit

You seem to be the ONLY person getting upset at me trying to get new growers off of wasting time on this ancient voodoo that most great growers don't do anymore.

Other people thank me for saving them time.

You actually had the audacity to say that I "shit on those whose shoulders we stood on to get here" because I edited and improved an old tek (from a guy who hasn't been here in years, and I credited him, per the Creative Common license that covers this whole site. The bottom of every page here says "Some rights reserved" and links that license, which allows "remixing", with credit.) Ythan put that here, and it sums up the spirit of this site.

FWIW, Beef already re-linked my edit of that old tek in his "Hitchiker's Guide to the Shroomery", so he's not sending new growers down a dead-end rabbit hole like you seem to want to do.

SmellyHobbit and I are working on a new improved tek. It's over half written, but will take a while to grow out plates to take custom photos for it.

Yo'ure acting childish. And a long-time very respected member here already said "fuckin cron. so dramatic hahah" about it.

I don't know what your need is to constantly shame me on this, on at least 3 threads now, but it's unseemly. 

I'm saving new growers time. You're obsessed with me. Move on, man.

No I'm not obsessed I just think your lazy and and coming at it with a half assed approach, you're talking about bods info when his whole fucking section is stating what we've all been saying for fucking years get over yourself it's nothing groundbreaking and who are you to try call out these people with zero proof of your own you are bringing nothing to the table here.
It would be easy to respect you writing a Tek and saying exactly what you're saying now but when you copy and paste somebody else's work and go into.their thread and say it's bad info that's shitty fucking etiquette with zero proof, expecially proof of your own you're putting zero work in but sit here being a keyboard warrior and want people to jump on board and I just showed u bod said nothing about sectors being the way to go in the very Tek u said had bad fucking info, grow up.

Thanks. I'm not ignoring his questions but I'm not answering him anymore, he gets mad no matter what.

I should have told the new person asking "Bod's tek is fine, but I'd ignore the parts about sectors, it's not needed." And I will continue to offer that advice when it comes up.
