I just posted this in the ochra thread so I'll  quote that here.  I'll update this post with the research paper if I don't forget.

And yet, are we really able to call anything true Nats, or even true Ochres? Has anyone done sequencing? Would the sequencing data even be accurate because what the mycologists have been calling Natalensis isn't Natalensis. Where's the microscopy?

Ps. Natelensis was an already described and sequenced species.  Folks found a new species they assumed was Natelensis.  Spores were dispersed under that name.  Folks grew it under that name.  And a few months ago, several samples of the new species were sequenced and it was discovered that the new species was never Ps. Natelensis.

And yes people have looked at the spores. The mycelium itself is also very different, ochra loves to go rhizo.  Nats form true sclerotia.

There's a ton of shots of ochra already but here's some photo of nat mycelium.

And the fruit bodies look different too, but I haven't fruited any yet.

It is based on an initial mis-identification of some ochraceocentrata specimens as natalensis. A lot of interest was generated when reports of crosses between what was believed to be natalensis and cubensis that produced stable isolations. Which is pretty unusual. Genetic testing has shown that what was being grown as natalensis is, in fact the closest related Psilocybe to cubensis found in the wild.

Both are newish species. Both seem readily cultivatable and ochradeocentrata could contribute some valuable genetics to what is becoming a GT-PE axis.

Editing this post to put this info on the first page of the thread.

Summary of Yoshi Amano's podcast linked below about the differences between Natalensis and Ochraceocentrata - cross posted from the older Ochra/Nat thread.

Some identifying differences:
  • Ochraceocentrata caps have a color gradient from center to edge with the center being a shade of ocher, hence the name.
  • Natalensis has a monochromatic cap that is more camel or tawney colored.

  • Ochraceocentrata may or may not produce a veil that breaks early indoors. So not an ideal indicator. Outdoor grows usually shows veil remnants.
  • Natalensis never have a stipe attached veil.

  • Natalensis spore size for true nats is larger, between 12 and 15 um.
  • Ochraceocentrata spores between 10 an 12 with none or almost none over 12 um.

  • Ochraceocentrata longer stipes of more even diameter
  • Natalensis has shorter stout stipes that thicken near the caps (indoor cultivated specimens).

  • Natalensis can take up to 3 to 4 months to fruit. EDIT: In later grows Yoshi found that they fruited faster than the initial runs, so this is not a reliable indicator.
  • Ochraceocentrata fruits more in line with cube timelines.

  • Natalensis: Huge find with independent confirmation is that Natalensis produce sclerotia in spawn starting at about 2 months that grow larger for several months. This is more common for grass land species.
  • Ochraceocentrata which is a native dung lover does not produce sclerotia.

  • All of the hybrids so far have been with ochraceocentrata. So far there are no confirmed natalensis crosses.

I think I covered the easy to see differences. I took a bunch of screen caps, but don't want to share their materials without permission so I don't plan to upload them here. But take a look at that free patreon video for some great info. (You may need to set up a free Patreon account to view it)

Another point that has already been stated elsewhere is that P. ochraceocentrata was previously identified as P. aff. natalensis, but that is officially being updated in the scientific community to reduce confusion.

Editing this post again to add pictures of agar plates of each.

Not saying that this is definitive, but it may help because they do have a different typical look to the growth on agar plates. Ochraceocentrata typically looks more rhizomorphic and Natalensis usually shows less ropy mycelium on plates.

So does anyone know whether the study done on Natalensis that showed extremely high levels of antioxidants and anti-inflammatories was actually true Natalensis?

Ding! Ding! Ding!

This has been my biggest question since the discovery of the misidentification. It is really the reason that I am so keen to grow it. Would suck to discover that all the work to figure out a new species wasn't necessary because study was actually ochraceocentrata the whole time. Never hurts to lean new stuff, though.

I just remembered that you and I have talked about this before.
 :toast:

Edit:
Study in question for anyone interested or who might know how to find out how they determined the species that were testing.

Edit 2:
Reading it again I see that 4.2 says that the spore provider called it Natal Super Strength which indicates that it probably was ochraceocentrata according to more recent information.

Same. In particular, one friend has a chronic cough that is helped by anti-inflammatory meds. She says that my gummies made with ochras help her relax and breathe. So maybe nats are not what the study used.

Still excited to grow these out to see, though.

All this makes me wonder if the print I got from a kind forum member is actually Nats. It was labelled as such, but that wasa last year. I currently have a few jars running, I will be sure to x-post the pics here and on the Ochra thread for comparison and hopefully a positive ID.  :strokebeard:

edit - I will love them either way, but the ochraceocentrata stuff happened before I grew any from my print.

There's been an absurd amount of 'objective' info tossed around regarding nats (which is fascinating for sure)

yet

I'm curious about the subjective- Has anyone eaten these?

What's their real?

Been REAL happy with the ochs- and the recent foray into Pan cyans. Is there anything about these that makes them worth growing besides exoticism/novelty?

and on the anti-inflammatory front- if I'm reading this correctly
Quote:
Psilocybin-containing mushrooms, commonly known as magic mushrooms, have been used since ancient and recent times for depression and to improve quality of life. However, their anti-inflammatory properties are not known. The study aims at investing cytotoxicity; antioxidant; and, for the first time, anti-inflammatory effects of Psilocybe natalensis, a psilocybin-containing mushroom that grows in South Africa, on lipopolysaccharide-induced RAW 264.7 macrophages.

than what they're saying right in the abstract is that there's been no studies- at all- on the anti-inflammatory effects of psilocybin mushrooms- IN TOTAL. They chose natalensis (or ochraceocentras....) as their test subject- but just because they found those compounds there doesn't mean that they're not also present in cubensis or others.

edit: a quick pubmed search reveal a study of 4 different mushroom strains and anti-inflammatory effects in vitro-

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8352634/

Quote:
Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Four Psilocybin-Containing Magic Mushroom Water Extracts in vitro on 15-Lipoxygenase Activity and on Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Cyclooxygenase-2 and Inflammatory Cytokines in Human U937 Macrophage Cells

Results: The four water extracts had poor 15-LOX inhibition activity with IC50 > 250 Β΅g/mL. Extracts were safe at the concentration studied and inhibited the LPS-induced production of pro-inflammatory mediators, TNF-Ξ± and IL-1Ξ² significantly and lowered IL-6 and COX-2 concentrations in treated human U937 macrophage cells. Water extracts also increased percentage viability of treated cells and levels of anti-inflammatory IL-10 non-significantly.

Conclusion: The study suggested that the hot-water extracts of the four psilocybin-containing magic mushrooms have potential anti-inflammatory effects executed by down-regulating pro-inflammatory mediators.

Keywords: 15-LOX; COX-2; Panaeolus cyanescens; Psilocybe cubensis; Psilocybe cubensis A+ strain; Psilocybe natalensis; pro-inflammatory cytokine.
