You didn't take the whole culture, the mycelium is embedded in the agar and will continue to consume the nutrients and grow outwards - its normal

Did similar with plates that were put to grain a few weeks ago just to see what they would do. They even started climbing over the top of the well and under the cling wrap

This could be the next step if you let the plates sit for longer :mushroom2:

Where did you get those lovely little plates? What size are they?

stockw, I've had this happen also. It's normal at all stages for mycelium to be able to go from fluffy to rhizo and back.

They look like 50mm.

They're 60mm from Celltreat. I ordered a case of 500 a while back (from eBay iirc, since it's about half the cost as the main site). Pretty neat for small form factor grows, but can take a bit to get used to if you typically use larger containers.

What does it mean to fully colonize an agar plate?

Is it just when mycelium covers the entire surface area regardless of its characteristics? Is there a benefit to waiting longer before using the plate?

I ask because I noticed multiple of my transfers seem to cover the entire surface quicklyโ€ฆ but itโ€™s typically very thin mycelium and it seems to thicken/continue developing even after โ€œfullyโ€ covering the surface.

You think? This is an example of what Iโ€™m talking about.
The spread from the transfer is typically very thin like this, and once it reaches the edge of the plate, it will thicken up over the next week or two.
I was attributing it to my agar formula

Broad range medium total nutrition content.
ME, Yeast, Peptone, Charcoal, Agar

Iโ€™ve put one of these plates to grain and now substrate and itโ€™s colonizing the substrate fine so I highly doubt mold

Mold colonizes sub too. Only time will tell what fruits

I have regular PDA plates running fine but I wanted to mix it up because I wasnโ€™t fond of their development.
This formula was obviously worse but thatโ€™s still information to use for comparison in the future.

What is the best way to clean up โ€œscalloped mycelium?  Do I take a small piece from the flattest section?  Water agar?  Is the culture not salvageable?

This is a Ghost culture that seems to grow very quickly / well, and produces really nice fruits with good potency, so Iโ€™d like to see it remain viable over time.

Iโ€™ve cloned twice now and the plates are always a bit scalloped and flushes certainly could be more dense.  Spawn cleanliness is good, but not perfect - and I canโ€™t seem to get perfect regardless of oat prep and ridiculously anal inoculation in front of an FFU.

I feel like one of the TCs have said trying to clean up scalloped plates always ends up not working as if something is constantly riding along with it as they transfer. Maybe Iโ€™m wrong and it was something else with agar.

you got some pics Bobgas?

You could try a hot pour if you suspect bacteria, water agar would be worth a shot
and there is always the Josex style BRF plates

Transferred these on 6/4 and ended up using other plates. These have been just sitting on my desk since then. If you zoom in the second picture there all these little dots. What are those? Knots? Also, is it recommended to take off cling wrap if I want plins?
