Did I miss something? Are people having trouble with grafting tape?

I just started seeing a lot of contams on my plates, even on just poured plates before I use them. I also just started using grafting tape instead of cling wrap. I hadn’t thought the two were related, but now that I read this…

Unlike Parafilm, grafting tape is not a uniform product.

Someone told me that the grafting tape they use is thick. What I use is very thin, like cling wrap.

I'm wondering if the thicker version cracks or just becomes less durable with age, like old Parafilm? (which is another reason I don't like Parafilm. I never had any that cracked, but it can get less pliable with age, maybe even from sitting in a hot warehouse waiting to be shipped.)

I think the thicker grafting tape was 3M, what I use is generic from some probably Chinese company on eBay.

Different thickness / chemistry of different brands of grafting tape could explain why some people have problems with it, and some (like me) don't.

F5 to F6 x7x tall. Top two are germ plates, 8 days.
Bottom three are T1s, about 18 hours. Hard to see but bottom left one is showing growth on agar on left side. Spores were freshly printed the day I did the germ plate.

Rub Parafilm hard between your gloved thumb and pointing finger. It separates the Para and backing enough to easily pull them apart.

I think you're kidding, but if not, medium. Not as hard as I can, and not light. Will vary vary with individual strength.

About the same pressure you'd use to vigorously use a pencil eraser on thick paper, if you're old enough to have used one.

Another tip that makes Parafilm less of a clusterfuck is cutting off a long piece, like a yard, removing the backing, then cutting that into size for each dish (About 5 or 6 inches if you stretch it right. Beats removing the backing for each one after cut.

I just give it a little tug at the middle top of the strip, tearing the paper and stretching the film, peel off the paper, fold the film in half lengthwise and stretch that bitch on a plate

That works too. It think it's called "the 3199 Mountain Camp Para tek."

Picax, x7x tall flush 1, F5 going to F6, T1 day 2, and germ(ination) plate day 10.

Might as well keep posting progress of this on here, it's boring but I'm sure there's someone new who'd like to see a plate grow in near real time.

Though this might grow a little faster growing than some.

Someone asked me what I meant by "cooling scalpel in agar", it's after flame sterilizing, you cool the blade in clean agar,  (makes a SSSSSS sound) so the high heat won't kill the spores or culture you're transferring. You can see cut marks from this above the T1 on the close up.

Parafilm must mess with y'all more than me. I use a paper cutter to cut 2cm strips. I hold it backing side down and bend/roll the tip of a corner down a bit and tease the film back up and peel. If it won't let go, I try another corner.

Hi mates. I had a couple plates that just stalled like this for a couple weeks. I transferred one by removing the entire radar of mycelium & left the rest of the agar sitting as an experiment. The previously empty remaining agar is now colonising with what looks to me like tomentose myc. Anyone experienced anything like this before? Just curious as to why this would happen.
