Agar questions-I may have goofed * 1

Ok I think that I made some mistakes with my agar cooking and sterillizing. First I used what I though to be light malt but it turned out to be pretty dark like lagar or something like that. Like the color of a dark stained wood almost. Will a dark malt effect the myc. any different than a light malt?
Also I PCed some jars and poured the agar into them right after the pc was out of pressure. I did fine on that step I am pretty sure but the jars of agar, the quart ones, were sucking in air as I took them to my room. I am afraid that they will contaminate along with all of my 1/2 pints with agar. Should I be worried?

umm I really wanted to help you out but i got really confused with your post.

first how much agar did you use, how much malt, how much water? how long did you PC?

second did you PC the agar as well in the jars, or did you just PC empty jars and pour agar (non PCed) in or did you PC both empty jars, and a jar of agar, and then transfer agar into the empty jars?

wait, i think i figured part of this out, so you PCed empty jars and used a quart jar to PC the agar, and then poured into the PCed 1/2 pints. if thats what you did you are golden.

My cat uses 10g of rye flour with 7.5 gs of agar per 500ml of h2o. then PCs this in a quart jar, and while the jars is very hot (and shaken to redistribute eveyrthing) this is poured into the petri dishes.

I hope this kinda helps or at least gets you started and perhaps you can give us a little more detail and we can help you more...

hehe sorry.
I used the mesurments that the back of the agar packed said. It was 1 Tbls=2.5 grams(bull) and then like 1 tsp of the malt = 2.5 grams
So I mesured out 20 grams of each this way and 1 litre of water then I boiled it down and then PCed it for 20 minutes at 15 psi
I did pc the 1/2 pint jars along with the jars of malt and then while still hot turned the oven on (because I didnt want to work in my glove box, probably melt it ) and poured the jars like that.
I guess I am good to go then, the main thing that I was worried about was the fact that the quart jars were sucking air while they cooled and I was thinking they might contaminate because of this. I am sure the 1/2 pints did the same thing, that was the big problem.

well agar is really light, so 1 TBLS may actually = 2.5 g, but malt should be more dense, so 1 TBLS of malt was probably like 10 grams, so when you thougt you wre putting in 10 grams, you probably put in like 40 :)

may I reccomend a scale? do a search (i guess everyone knows how big a fan I am of the search) for scales and you will find many links on where to buy them

You can get a hand scale from any dart store. Or a digital at a head shop.

my bad,
umm the only thing else i could think of is perhaps what you bought wasnt light malt, but then again, it could have been and i dont know since I can't see the package. also i have played with malt in years ( I used to brew my own beer witha friend of mine, beer was more his hobby and I was more interested in what my cat did)

Also i dont know if the time had anything to do with it, perhaps caramelization or something. but I only PC for 15 @ 15 for my cat, fuck I ain't trusting that pussy with a gas stove.

I am also experimenting with "dark" "whole grain" Malt since i could not find any light malt extract.

this is 23 years old but there are recipes for malt extract not just light.
