Method for pasteurizing small volumes of casing 25

Lately I’ve been growing Pans and semperviva, both of which benefit from a casing layer. In order to run as many sets of genetics as possible I’ve been growing using Muda bottles. One problem I’ve encountered is the need for properly pasteurized casing material, in small quantities, very often. My traditional methods of pasteurization, water bath or steamer, were leaving me with lots of left over casing material that would sit around for a week, and then get thrown away. I needed a better method.
Another side effect of many different bottle grows is the almost constant harvesting of fruits as they reach maturity. I noticed I was running my dehydrator 4-5 days a week. I pasteurize at 160 degrees, I dehydrate at 160 degrees. !
My usual casing mix is 10:10:0.25 parts peat:verm:hydrated lime. Pretty standard recipe. I’ve been mixing this up dry and storing in a quart jar. When I need a bit, I’ll take a few tablespoons from the jar, hydrate it to just under field capacity, and put it into a ziplock bag. Quarts and sandwich bags are the perfect size. Zip the top, lay flat and push the casing to fill out the bag so it’s about 3/8” thick. Toss in my already running dehydrator.

In four hours I have pasteurized casing!
I was curious just how stable the temperature is in the dehydrator, and how hot the inside of the casing was getting. I pushed a temp probe into a bag and let it run four four hours. The temp ramped up quite quickly with such a small volume of material. It stabilized at 158 degrees and stayed there the whole time.

This has been a time saver so many times. Obviously not a method to use if you’re casing trays, but for small experimental grows, or any small scale use, this is a very easy method of pasteurization.

thank so much for posting and your work! i was meant to come across this, im trying the same thing so i know i will be checking in and keeping up.
but different exotics (pans, tamps, semps) in bottles is something im in the process of doing too because i want to sample the different fruits and better my knowledge in this craft.
nice ideas indeed!

The synchronicity is strong today! I stumbled on this genius post as my second round ever of semperviva are approaching full colonization and was planning to run them as Muda style bottles!
My natalensis should be ready to harvest and run the dehydrator about the same time as I'll need casing so I will most definitely be giving this a try! Mad props to you Roscoe!

This is a genius method of substrate pasteurization! I can see myself using this to make small batches of substrate to patch any damaged areas on my tubs after harvesting.

I used to pasteurize it in my oven, but I might just try this out with my next casing materials Thanks for sharing <3

Happy times! I love seeing others getting use from this. Honestly this is the only way I make casing now. Even when I do trays, I don’t do a lot, so I just throw three or four bags on the bottom tray of the dehydrator. So nice to not bother with a water bath and babysitting the temperature.

Really great idea! Thank you for sharing, It is one of those things that seem so obvious once someone intelligent and creative points it out. Thanks for keeping your mind open and having this "Ah HAA! moment and then evaluating it and sharing the proven tek with us.
