Agar is a seaweed derivative that is liquid when heated and gels to a jello-like consistency when cooled back to room temp. In mushroom cultivation, the idea is to nutrify the agar with ingredients that are nutritious for mushroom mycelium, essentially mix the ingredients together with water, pressure cook and allow to cool complete. Mycelium culture is then grown on agar to be transferred to spawn/substrate.

No, if you have contaminated syringes, you don't want to grow them on agar, the contams will simply thrive on the agar.

Here is a basic-info agar link from grow/find of the Shroomery. You can buy agar itself in health food stores, or buy MEA agar from fungiperfecti.com.

The plastic petri dishes come presterilized and are ment for 1 time use. They don?t survive pressure cooking.

If you will use agar only accasionally and on small scale, then I recommend to buy 10 glas dishes.(but that?s me, you can off course go plastic independant from the scale...)

If you want to make it big style, plastic is the way to go.

Buy The Mushroom Cultivator from Paul Stamets, this book has thissubject pretty well covered.
