Micropore tape isn't always a no-no. I've had good luck wrapping it tight TWICE around each plate. You'll need to buy a lot of rolls of it though.

But I had bad results using it to cover the hole on jars to PC, inoculate, and consolidate. Some say if you use several layers that works, but I had far fewer contams in jars once I switched to synthetic filter discs.

I actually switched to Parafilm for plates for a couple months. I used it correctly, and got more contams, not fewer. Not sure why. I switched back to micropore. You're milage may vary, and many people have great results with Parafilm.

Because "That’s definitely mycelium, just not the good kind" offers more useful info than just "naw." It's mold mycelium.

Knowing that mold makes mycelium is a step toward being able to tell it from shroom mycelium.

Prakriti and Bonerjamz...walk us through your process.

Do you have a pressure cooker? how do you use it? Do you vent steam for 10 min before putting on the stopcock (you should)

Do you have an SAB? how do you use it?

Are you spraying inside your SAB with ISO alcohol, then letting it sit a few min before use? (should be) ...and even between transfers if transferring from a filthy plate.

Do you flame sterilize your scalpel between plates? (should be, but outside the SAB and away from ISO, hopefully.)

Are you trying to not pass your hand over open plates? and trying to keep plates open for as little time as possible? (you should be doing both those things)

It's likely good old "cobweb mold" aka Cladobotryum mycophilum, a  mycoparasite.

I think the more corecter name would just be Cladobotryum spp. since there are many species this could be of the C.

I just copy and pasted the one named on a paper haha.

I remember somewhere on this site Bod said cobweb mold was rare, he'd only seen the real thing twice.

But everyone seems to think any white mold is cobweb mold.

Probably 5% of the posts on Reddit shroom forums are people posting clean cube mycelium, saying "is this ok", and someone telling them it's cobweb mold.

I don't know what the thing that Prakriti posted is, but I've gotten it several times. It's fast growing, looks just like that. But it's not so much white as it is clear...which was easy to see once I started using black charcoal agar. Looks black on black agar, white on light agar.

A lot of people say a lot of things. 89% of all statistics are made up.

That's probably actual cobweb mold though.

there are at least 11 species of "cobweb mold" aka Cladobotryum spp./ Hypomyces sp and there are several morphologies.








Now please take not...This is not a fucking cloud. Pin molds are usually misdiagnosed for actual real cobweb mold.

Sorry for not being more clear, I meant ‘yes’ to all of your questions above…I’m doing all of those things 🙂
I’m feeling pretty good about my sterile technique so far…I just got sloppy trying to take a tissue sample for the first time whilst drunk.

I’m feeling pretty good about my sterile technique so far…I just got sloppy trying to take a tissue sample for the first time whilst drunk.

I really don't appreciate you lumping my advice or experience in with reddit noob advice. I'm going to take offense to that nektar.

I am one of the foremost amateur "experts" (tongue in cheek dont get excited) of contamination with nearly 20 years of experience. I doubt anyone here has seen the contaminations that I have. I have ran a large room for almost 20 fucking years STRAIGHT.

So really don't like how you totally brushed my comments off.

Now please respond to my post above where I totally refute what you have of my opinion about cobweb with pictures from scientific papers on mushroom cobweb disease.

And just one more thing cause I'm feeling down about myself today...been out of dabs for days and iced in. Everything sucks.

I am THE godfather of proper laminar flowhood design in the OMC. Before my loudmouthing, it was always "MaKe So AnD So CfM At 1.0" sTaTiC pReSsUrE". Until me no one in the OMC knew/preached that static pressure is a function of airflow and 6" hepas do not make 1" w.g. static pressure at 90-100fpm. I did that. Just me. So I don't suck alright.

I was just trying to curb people from just thinking mycelium is strictly psilocybe. I know you know better sandman but there is a surprising amount of people that don’t know that a lot of fungi have mycelium and think only psilocybes do. I saw a guy on Reddit thinking he was gonna find cubes growing on a log because there were white rhizomorphs on it.

That's what I figured.

I have a theory that people prize rhizo over tomentose mycelium not because it makes better shrooms, but because it looks less like many common molds.

haha. There is so much mis-info there.

However, there are far fewer people on reddit shroom subs than here screaming "LISTEN TO ME! I HAVE DECADES OF EXPERIENCE, EVERYONE ELSE IS AN IDIOT! I DEMAND YOU DO MY BIDDING!" which is why some people leave here, go there, and never come back.
