I use the plastic reusable coffee filters that come with some of them. Can find them at thrift stores for 50Β’.

Yeah I use mesh bags - like you'd use for making almond milk etc. Really helps with clarity.

There is no need to filter agar sediment.

That's technically called a nut bag. Haha

It would be from your LME, not your agar specifically. You filter your agar and that agar is gonna collect in the filter. You can filter the LME / flakes / yeast.

I've been using cheesecloth but it's only for filtering the yeast that I've just started using. Works great. I don't get LME sediment anymore but the yeast flakes that I've been using really don't like to dissolve.

You can get around the LME sediment by adding your agar powder and LME to the media bottle and only adding half of the distilled water that you're gonna use. Microwave until boiling, shake the hell out of the bottle, Microwave and shake again. Do that a few times and the LME should be fully dissolved. Hold the bottle up to a light source to verify. Open the bottle slowly so that the liquid doesn't spray out and burn you.

Pour the other half of the distilled water that you're gonna use into a heat resistant cup (I use a Pyrex beaker). Microwave until boiling and stir it really good. Strain that through a cheese cloth into your media bottle. Add food coloring (or don't), shake again and PC.

This plate doesn't have yeast but there's unfiltered LME and agar in it.

Tried it, didn't work. You sure the sediment is coming from Agar and not the nutes?
Since I switched from baking malt to muntons LME, sediment is a problem of the past. Every plate is clear as fuck.
I think D3 has a Tek for it

The agar D3 uses is the clearest I've seen. "Living Jin", he talks about it here.

I was getting clear plates with that and potato flakes until I started going goth and made all the plates activated charcoal black. Seems to be a nutrient, too. I still use potato. Is clearer than the yeast I tried, but I've only tried one yeast.

This works without the black too, and is clear without filtering:

I'm going to buy either cheese cloth or coffee filters and it would suck to buy coffee filters if they're not going to work :o

Thanks

clear plate pic tax  maybe if my yeast plates are completely opaque will I consider it but I get good results using d3 TEK. You do you though! I rarely do things 'right' so I'm not one to tell someone they're wrong lol

RE filtering, if you use a good brand of agar (like Living Jin), you don't need to filter it. I wouldn't try to filter agar anyway due to the thickness. When I mentioned the nut-milk bag, I was talking about filtering the other ingredients prior to adding agar and heating. If you want yeast, get it from HiMedia; it dissolves completely leaving zero sediment.

These days, I do GWA for everything and obviously that stuff isn't really clean so I filter that using the nut-milk bag, add my water, add my agar and cook.

I add yeast flakes to hot grain broth and then filter that, then add it hot to telephone agar powder and bring to a boil and swirl till dissolved. Never had a problem seeing through it.

If .1% (.001) leads to this in LC, why do we use 2% (.02) for agar?
