That’s one massive ball of pleurotus mycelium in a liquid culture. I’m saying if .1% can create that much growth doesn’t 2% or 20x more nutrients for agar seem overkill? But maybe using in addition to agar would require more to disperse evenly and have nutrients available throughout where as with LC we can swirl to make contact. Just spitballing.

My guess at the reason for factor of ~10 diff in nutrients between typical agar and LC recipes is that in LC the nutrients are much more available than agar. LC is a 3D environment and nutrients can diffuse evenly through the liquid, where in agar nutrients are fixed in place by agar and the grown happens largely on a 2D plane so many nutrients are 'locked' in the body of the agar.

Probably has to do with it growing inside of vs on the surface. You can use less than 2% though, I see a lot of people are using around 1-1.5% recipes of MEA.

I had no idea people were straining agar.

Using lme I only ever get sediment if I didn’t heat it enough.

I would like to use 1 small wedge in 2 separate LC's. I like one for the uniformity yet I like the other for aggressiveness.

Could someone give me an opinion on which is a better candidate? Or should I do 1 of each?

haha. Tape residue on the lid. After I pour plates, I tape them in stacks, and leave them a week to see if any are contammed. This one was on the top.

5 oclock is just agar that had a little ripple from moving it while still cooling to put tape on.

This is very close to very bright light, and I increased contrast to see the mycelium better.

I'll post a pic of this later when I open it up.

I wouldn't be insulted to have someone point out contam I missed.

Thank you! That's a relief. I made (2) 500ml media bottles with 250ml of LC each. 1 of them I did 1g LME/0250ml. The other I did 2.5g LME/250ml. I have the heavier nute LC on a magnetic stirplate with a stirbar @100 running constant. The lighter LC left to rest.

I read Mushboys LC tek a couple years ago and started one but had to pull the plug. I read it again today and decided from the comments I will do 1 his way (1g/250ml) and 1 with a commentary idea of more LME and a stir plate, for faster growth. Should be fun to compare either way.

I confess that I've never used traditional LC. I've been using SSLC and it's worked so well that I've just stuck with it.

I've been cutting a 100mm plate into quarters and dropping each quarter into the SSLC media. Put it on a magnetic stir plate for 24 hours and let it sit for about a week. Usually, a thick layer of myc starts to form on the surface of the media. When that happens, I put it back on the stir plate to break the top layer into little pieces and use it nocc jars with it right away.

Lately, I've only been making media batches of 100-125mL. When I use a smaller amount of media like that, I just drop the wedge into the media and blend it for 24 hours and use it right after. Ive been using 25g of media per quart jar and that usually reaches full colonization in 5-7 days.

With small amounts of sslc just dropping a wedge and letting it sit on the stirrer for 24 hours makes it mixed enough to finish jars in a week?

It's been working for me. The wedge doesn't really dissolve at that point but the stirrer shreds most of the myc off of the surface and mixes it up in the media.

I made some SSLC recently, one came out just fine, the other became a jello brick with some water around it. I shook the shit out of it and it broke up ok but is a very different consistency then the other. Same recipe for both, wtf happened? Any ideas? Did I not mix it up enough? No way I was that high to fuck up the recipe that bad, or maybe I was. The jar I shook now has a permanent layer of bubbles about an inch thick .

Id post pics but not in the Lab at the moment.
