Cheers for advice! I am considering flow hood, but build myself. Checking prices for HEPA, blower motors and alignments with each other. Believe putting in willingness, it must come out a descent tool  :hook:

I've build 3 flowhoods in the past. Sold 2 of them to member on here before. They're easy to build, I would just do yourself a favor and get a voltage regulator for the fan, so you can adjust it to the perfect output to get your 100 through the front. Hardest part is figuring out how big a one you can build before the wife comes in and burns your shit down

Thats right ) wifey doesnt take this hobby same way as flower power :goat:
Looking into building one 600x300mm or closest. Meanwhile it will serve the purpose (not planning using bag transfers), so g2g transfers and smaller scale work will be covered.
However, already can tell that everything that i have bought for this microscopy goes to be changed and doubles costs of improvemt. So yeah, will never get too good with equipment and measures to cultivate best strains!  :bow2:
:b00ftube:
Meanwhile practicing manual sterile practices

I've taken to being okay with just the SAB, I know it works long as you keep the principals and theory in mind the whole time.

It really just comes down to what you're trying to do and how much at once.

Most of the work I'll be doing in there is all smaller scale petri work and I'll be focusing on each strain individually. This will be made easier through the use of no-pours and EzLC, so I can cut down on vectors.

I've got 8 strains and 8 food colors to work with ironically, so visually everything will be easy and I know I can safely do open air inoculations of my grain jars on my kitchen counter, so it's different for everyone.

If you find you have issues with contams in a SAB, it may come down to about 50 different things, so you may want to look at those first, because it will likely be cheaper in the long run.

I live in the middle of a large Canadian city and can find everything relatively easily, but a good quality made hood with proper clean air isn't the cheapest venture. Can also take up a lot of precious space for the rest of your activities.

All comes down to keeping things simple. I've over complicated and over spent on this hobby before, but I figured out recently, that by just looking through some of the better teks on this site and making a solid plan first, that I could save 1) a fuck ton of money 2) a shit load of my valuable time 3) my fleeting sanity

I think you might want to look at replacing your current work station and trying some techniques that may seem daunting at first, but really aren't and make doing this worth while in the end. If in the end you feel you absolutely need to, then look at building a hood.

Just remember to look at a hood as an investment and don't cheap out, because it would such if it shit the bed after a short while, or doesn't do what it's actually meant to.

Mate, the flowhood can be used for tissue culture/micropropagation so either of you could use your mycology equipment for plants too. Furthermore, it could be handy if you need filtered air when there's bushfire smoke or if there's "asthma weather" or bad hayfever weather. My mother has respiratory issues and when the smoke has been bad because of bush fires, burn offs, Winter wood heater smoke etc. then I've told her that I have a special filter that I could lend her (my flowhood). Just jury rig a pre filter over the intake, such as a cheap furnace filter, so that you save the more expensive HEPA filter.

How bulk are we talking?

Do a Google search for "feed stores" in Melbourne. Gumtree tends to have people who sell various grains in bulk amounts.

Is there a particular reason why you want oats? Wheat is often easier to find and can be bought rather cheaply. I normally use feed grade wheat which I get for $1 per kg in 10kg bags from a pet shop.

Did you find the bulk oats that you were looking for? I imagine you'd be able to find a lot of barley at the moment given China's tantrum.

I like oats, getting from Enfield Produce, pet store. 1kg is 1.80. Less for 10 kg.
However, running some strange episode, 300ml jars colonise 100% but 800 ml jars stall and no colonisation after inoculation or g2g transfer. So either way, ending growing mycelium in 300ml jars.

I've been seeing some threads on natalensis (very potent, grows ridiculously fast to the point where the myc does some really weird almost detrimental stuff if grown like cubes...) and it's been getting me very intrigued.

For example this thread:
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26414295/fpart/1/vc/1

Has anyone here in Aus managed to come across some and get it growing?

Hi fellow Aussie and Kiwi Cultivators.

Seeing as we are slightly Isolated on this side of the world (for better or for worse), I was wondering if there were many who have managed to obtain and grow any novel strains.

I ask purely out of interest and with one eye on it in the distant future. Would love to hear (and see if you are willing to share) about your grows and hear if it was any trouble getting your hands on spores?

I've been putting in a lot of effort to get a good clean azurescens culture going. I have some wbs spawn and I've got some really good looking LC.

Guys, today and in recent weeks I've seen cubensis growing outside in Perth weather. I can't believe it. Perhaps they should be cloned for their cold tolerance.

Hi guys,

I just wanted to say hi. I'm in Newcastle and am finally getting into a little shroom growing after wanting to for years. I'm going to have a look around and get some spores and will take it from there. I was thinking sporeworks however I'm not up to speed on this forum so might change my mind.

Anyhoo, it's great to find yo guys! I look forward to updating as I move along and will def be asking some questions as I move along so thank you in advance for all your help.

All the best to all, have a great day,
Matthew

Hi and welcome to the Shroomery

I would be careful importing spores, as they are illegal here. Chances are you will get them through, but there are definitely cases of people getting raided after getting spores shipped internationally.

You should try to get them domestically, or if you want to practice your agar cleaning, recover some from some desiccated flesh.

Chaps, keep an eye on the prices of isopropyl alcohol and cleaning grade ethanol at the moment. Prices are coming down but given the rising COVID19 patient numbers in Victoria and the panic buying starting again then the prices might go back up.

Need some help should I let it grow more or make some isolations to new agar. The most of it looks fluffy and like bum fluff.

There is also a small faint white radius outside the main strainy white growth, when I make cuts do I take that part as well as the fluffy white area?

Is pics 5 6 7 mold??? It's not the path where I inoculated is sorta dark in the middle.

Pics 3&4 11/06/20
All others 19/06/20

Pics 1&2 the same but inverted
Pics 3&4 the same but rotated
Pic 5&6 the same
Pic 7 stand alone
