Yeah, I was looking for flaws and I didn't even notice that at first. It's an apples to oranges comparison and in retrospect I now question if it's intentionally misleading as a result. That really is hard for me to reconcile otherwise.

I just did some research on this group and it seems that half their funding comes from labor unions. Labor unions are likely to benefit from the tarrifs more than others, if jobs are laid off bc of them they're not likely to be union jobs, and new industry jobs could fsvor the unions. There's a possible selection bias motive.

It's reasonable to conclude the few thousand jobs directly related to aluminum manufacturing came from the tariffs, but who's to say where the other 1.4 million jobs came from.

To put it another way it was projected we would lose 300,000 jobs because of the tariffs, yet we've gained 1.4 million jobs overall since they were enacted, thus the article concludes the tariffs had a positive impact on jobs.

No the article did not conclude the tariffs had a positive impact on jobs.  You keep changing what people/articles actually say.  Let me quote what it said for you:

"to date, there is no evidence of the negative downstream effects claimed in the Trade Partnership study to be found anywhere in the U.S. economy"

krypto2000 said:
It's entirely possible however that we would have gained 1.7 million jobs with or without the tariffs, and that we did in actuality lose 300,000 bringing the net gain down to 1.4.

And by that very same logic it's entirely possible that we would have gained 1.1 million jobs with or without the tariffs, and that we did in actuality gain 300,000 bringing the net gain up to 1.4 million.

Again, the claim wasn't that tarrifs had a positive impact on jobs outside the aluminum industry - the claim was "there is no evidence of the negative downstream effects".

Yeah it means 300k fewer jobs

You're wrong too for the same reason.

I didn't say there was a negative effect, I asked how the article proved that there has not been any negative effects. It didn't prove jobs have not been lost and it did not analyze the cost to consumers.

Those are the two main areas I see that negative effects would be felt. If you don't look at those two areas then yes, it's perfectly reasonable to conclude negative effects haven't been found, thats not going to doing anything however to convince me they don't exist.

And for the third time, the article's claim was "there is no evidence of the negative downstream effects".

krypto2000 said:

And the article didn't try to prove that.  It said there is no evidence of a negative effect on jobs.  If you believe there is evidence, then burden of proof falls on you to provide it.

krypto2000 said:

As for the cost to consumers, it was already pointed out that aluminum costs would go up by as much as 10%, but you'd get thousands of new aluminum jobs and a lot more money from those jobs as a result.

The burdon of proof does not rely on me. There are two primary metrics that would be affected negatively. They did not adequately show those two metrics were not affected which is their claim, the burdon of proof relies on them.

As the saying goes their claim is "not wrong," but that doesn't mean it is right/has value. "I don't see anyone outside" doesn't convince anyone that no one is there if they realize it's dark and that I didn't even look out the window.

Not "would be affected", but "could be affected".  And burden of proof always falls on the person making a claim.  The article claimed there is no evidence of a negative effect on jobs, and unless evidence is found then the article is correct.

But I do understand your desire to know whether the number of jobs gained without tariffs would have been 1.1 million, 1.4 million, 1.7 million, or some other number.

That's a bad analogy, because they looked at the data, unlike your example.

Republicans are getting on board, thanks to the libertarian wing of the party. In fact, while libertarians have had a lot of negative impacts on the party (deregulation, public education, and giving away protected public lands), they have done a few of good things, particularly on social issues, such as marijuana, gay rights, etc. Libertarians also tend to be more anti-war.

Republicans own most of the prison interest as well as law enforcement and they're less informed about the reality of marijuana with regard to a lack of negative effects, why would they decriminalize weed?

Because the Republitarians said so.

The American Libertarian movement is a joke. When will we admit that?

That's a great idea.  It's the best way for him to convince the hard right that he has no intention of decriminalizing marijuana.

I think we have a bipartisan agreement in this country that libertarians are a joke.

Let's be honest though, this is Trump. He can go campaign in Wisconsin and say he's going to crack down even harder on marijuana laws while campaigning the next day in Colorado and saying he's going to decriminalize. When questioned on it by a journalist later he will say he sees merits of both and give some vague statement that he hasn't made up his mind yet, but that he'll do what he thinks is best. Both sides that believe him will continue to not think critically and believe he supports whatever they want him to; if he does want they want he'll receive credit, if he doesn't they'll find someone or something else to blame as to why he couldn't do it.
