Why Iraq is like Viet Nam

There are too many to list, but let's focus on number 3 for this discussion

1. No immediate threat to the USA.

2. No Congressional Declaration of War. (resolution 114 was NOT a formal declaration of war, more like the ancient Roman senate giving Caesar "temporary" dictatorial powers.)

3. The "enemy" is not clearly delineated.

During the Vietnam "War", the Viet Cong would frequently be indistinguishable from "neutral" civilians. US soldiers, fearful of being shot or booby-trapped by an invisible enemy, would take to all-too-often killing ordinary non-combative farmers and sometimes whole villages. The thinking went, "Hey, I would rather be wrong than dead." I do NOT fault the soldiers, but the untenable position that they were put in.

Fast-forward to 2004. The soldiers are getting picked off almost daily from unseen enemies. This creates hyper-paranoia and will lead to more and more "over-reactive" killing of non-violent civilians, which will in turn breed more anti-American sentiment which in turn will fuel more attacks and hence more backlash and so on. This escalation is inevitable. Is this Operation Infinite Resolve or Operation Infinite Stupidity?

I think it's basially Operation Get Revenge for Daddy.

How did the Vietnam War end again? Wasn't it something like gradually transferring our efforts to a halfassed and unenthuiastic South Vietnamese army which basically was no longer under attack once we left? Or did we lose that war? I don't think Communism swept the world when we left either, or is my memory wrong?

People don't talk enough about how much of an asshole JFK was for starting Vietnam. That war was even more unnessesary than "Operation Iraqi Liberation".

Explain to me exactly how JFK started Vietnam. I must be greatly confused on some issues.
