Bush decries Viet Nam comparison
    #2560307 - 04/14/04 06:25 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

At his news conference, Bush said comparing Iraq to Vietnam ''sends the wrong message to our troops and sends the wrong message to the enemy.''

*Swami satire*
Continuing, Bush added, "Now if we had compared Iraq to, oh say, El Salvador, that would be sending the correct message to our enemies and perhaps they would go "Doh, now it all makes sense," and lay down their weapons."

He should have been more blunt and just said it's a moronic comparison.

You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. What one person receives without working for another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for that my dear friend is the beginning of the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it. ~ Adrian Rogers

Hmmm let's see:

Somalia:

1. No direct and immediate threat to USA.
2. Extremely costly without general benefit to the public.
3. Our boys died for essentially nothing.
4. We went there to protect the local civilians and ended up killing many of them.
5. No war was declared.
6. No match - general public was unaware until conflict was over.
7. We left without accomplishing our mission.

Viet Nam:

1. No direct and immediate threat to USA.
2. Extremely costly without general benefit to the public.
3. Our boys died for essentially nothing.
4. We went there to protect the local civilians and ended up killing many of them.
5. No war was declared.
6. The conflict divided the nation.
7. We left without accomplishing our mission.

Iraq:

1. No direct and immediate threat to USA.
2. Extremely costly without general benefit to the public.
3. Our boys died for essentially nothing.
4. We went there to protect the local civilians and ended up killing many of them.
5. No war was declared.
6. The conflict divided the nation.
7. Remains to be seen, but so far mission is far from accomplished despite a  clear statement by our CIC.

I see your point. No parallels at all.

i liked when that reporter asked bush what he thought about the comparisons people are making between iraq and vietnam, his answer pretty much put me in my place. "i believe those comparisons are FALSE"  oh, well there it is....case closed...can't argue with that...

And a good laugh was had by all.

In your comparison you seem to fit your disputable statements about Iraq to resemble Vietnam. The Iraq YOU are creating is Vietnam, but that says nothing about what is actually going on. The only 'points' that are not your opinion are 5 and 6.

Hell if you want i can come up with 7 reasonable points comparing Kerry to Hitler or Jello to gasoline.

And about the point 7 of vietnam. Our goal in vietnam was to prevent the NVA from taking over the south. When we left in 73 after signing the paris peace acords the nva had not taken over the south. Thus technically our goal had been achieved. Only 2 years later did the NVA launch a massive attach allowing them to defeat tbe south.

Its a strech but hell so is your comparison.

Now, now, d33p. Swami was taking it easy. He could have added a whole bunch more if he felt like it. Here are a few more Viet Nam parallels --

8) The anti-war crowd portrayed the administration as evil and un-caring.
9) John Kerry used the anti-war movement for his personal political aspirations.
10) Comparisons were made between the President and Hitler.
11) No thought was given to the consequences the South Vietnamese people would suffer if we immediately pulled out our troops.
12) The morale of our troops overseas suffered because of the anti-war movement's actions at home while the enemy's resolve was bolstered.
13) The left proclaimed that the South Vietnamese people would be better off under the North's rule instead of being subjected to U.S. intervention.
14) The enemies of freedom called the U.S. efforts imperialistic.
15) Industry greed was claimed to be the main reason for the war.
16) The administration was accused of manufacturing its reasons for the war.
17) Hollywood celebrities received much free publicity by speaking out against the war, and most of Hollywood was adamantly against it.
18) A major network's anchorman lost his objectivity and proclaimed the war to be a losing enterprise.
19) Grieving families of killed servicemen lashed out angrily at the government.
20) American Colleges and Universities were centers of leftist, anti-war propaganda.
21) "Make Love, Not War" was a simplistic sound-bite thought to be very, very clever.
22) American troops were incorrectly claimed to come only from lower-income families.
23) The leftists treated the U.N. as a legitimate, intelligent, governing body that would act in our country's best interests.
24) Atrocities committed by the North Vietnamese were downplayed and under-reported by the three major networks.
25) Servicemen's efforts at humanitarian aid were ignored in favor of body counts and negative war images.
26) Congress busied itself with finger pointing and witch-hunting.

As usual, you are correct. The military-industrial complex did not make hundreds of millions of dollars (no parallel to Haliburton which I publicly proclaimed would get the lion's share of the contracts long before the bidding even began) from the Viet Nam war while applying political pressure to keep it going and the result was highly successful; a worthwhile investment in lives and money not better spent elsewhere.

What are the legitimate reasons for Halliburton getting a no-bid contract on Iraq?

I don't know who their competition is, but why weren't they given a chance to get in on the blood money?

That has been posted here before, Learyfan. Halliburton had won (in the Clinton years) something called a "standing offer" (? unsure if that is exactly what it's called) which applies in certain situations in which action must be taken more quickly than can be addressed through the normal lengthy and byzantine bidding and confirmation process. It is a standard procedure, and has been for years and years.

You will note that Halliburton is not the only contractor working in Iraq.

Keep the crude flowing George and your cronies will see you in 2005

FEH! I lost much of the male gene pool of my family to Viet Nam. I wonder how many will die in this "false' viet nam?

Thank You Swami for the comparative outlines
