"Images flashed very quickly can have a more indirect influence.. as it is picked up by the subconscious but too fast for the conscious mind to process."

Now, I don't have any data in front of me, but I seem to recall a study which showed that quickly flashed images in advertising had no discernable effect.

For a while it was quite a popular idea, theaters were doing things like inserting single frames showing popcorn or candy into movies, but it was eventually proven to be false.

Don't quote me or anything... like I said, I've got no data in front of me.

Which is why saying that advertising has not effect on you is downright foolish.

Advertising has absolutely no effect on me.

Let me be redundant and say that one more time; Advertising has absolutely no effect on me.

I have no favorite beer. I have no favorite food. I have no favorite television show. I have no favorite movie. I do not even have a favorite color. Not even a favorite band. I do not have a particular style of music that I prefer over another. I do ,however, have a favorite drug. Mushrooms.

I have never had a compulsion to buy something. Never. If I need something, I look for the best deal possible.

I did not say that I have never been influenced by anything.

We are talking about advertising. I really do not understand your comprehension problem regarding this. You are wrong. I know because I am me.

As a matter of fact, this is the one thing about myself that I am most certain of. I am immune.

Also, I do not see how your little story proves anything about me. No matter how clever you think it is.

I once stuffed cheese into my cousins hotdog. He did not like cheese.but He said it was the best hotdog he ever ate. I guess this proves everyone likes cheese.

You're oversimplifying and misinterpreting what I'm saying.

Not buying lots of stuff, and not having a favorite band doesn't mean advertising doesn't effect you.

Advertising has an effect on everyone. You're exposed to something like 1000 ads a day. None of them ever influence you in any way? I find that hard to believe.

It's not even necessarily the intended effect, like with my friend John, the advertising made him dislike the product.

"We are talking about advertising. I really do not understand your comprehension problem regarding this. You are wrong. I know because I am me."

It seems like everyone thinks that things don't have any subconcious effect on them. That everything their mind does is right out in the open. How a person thinks their brain is working does not necessarily have anything to do with how their brain is actually working.

"I once stuffed cheese into my cousins hotdog. He did not like cheese.but He said it was the best hotdog he ever ate. I guess this proves everyone likes cheese."

That's not anything like the logic I was using for my story.

If it were it would be: My friend didn't like the beer, I gave him the beer and he liked it, therefore everyone likes that beer.

Oh yeah, and why do you think I have a comprehension problem? I understand perfectly that you believe advertising has had no effect on you. I just think you're totally wrong.

The fact that you tricked your friend into liking a beer that he thought he disliked, does nothing for your arguement. I don't see how you could possibly think it does.

Wether you believe it or not, I am not the least bit influenced to consume based on advertisement. I could not tell you what kind of shoes that I have on my feet right now. Honestly. Even though I have 20,000 dollars in the bank and have over 200,000 dollars equity in my home, I drive a 1996 tempo. It is red. I am not particularly fond of red. It was cheap and it runs good.

I am quite possibly the least materialistic person you might meet. I have no desire to own things. Of course I need to house myself and provide myself with transportation, and I do have a family.

My personal belongings would fit in my car. Except my piano. And the house ,of course.

And my little story was just as pointless as yours. That is why I posted it.

My cousin did not know the cheese was in the hot dog. And you are making a generalization based on your story, so I made one of my own.

The point of my story was: people are influenced by things subconciously without knowing it.

It happens all the time.

The point of your story... you're not a materialist. Ok, fine, but that doesn't mean advertising has no effect on you.

Fair enough. I was not arguing with that. But on a conscious level, Based on my consumption habits, I am not effected by advertising.

Things are a bit more complicated than you think. Imagine children watching TV and getting "influenced" by such images. The worst part is that it already happened and it's very dangerous. Here, http://www.virtualpet.com/vp/farm/pmonster/seizures/pmnews1.htm and this page is for the conspiracies folks http://www.mt.net/~watcher/pokemonmindcontrol.html

Then we buy and build weapons thinking that immediate danger comes from the outside, that's ridiculous, it's everywhere and it comes at light speed .......

"Imagine children watching TV and getting "influenced" by such images. The worst part is that it already happened and it's very dangerous."

Total, total bullshit.

The seizures were a total accident. They'll only occur in a very rare form of epilepsy, but a few kids had them. It's too bad, but it has nothing to do with mind control or any of that nonsense.

To say that someone can be controlled or influenced by flashing images is pseudoscience.

Basically, you're just making a blind assumption based on absolutely no evidence or data. Just because it's not an uncommon belief does not give it any credibility at all.

Well, that's a claim.

How do I know that it's not just bullshit though?

"Images flashed with more of a blue hue stimulate the emotional center of the brain and will elicit a deeper emotional reaction than images lacking blue colors."

How do you feel about that statement?
