This is my 1st attempt at shoeboxes and from what I've read there was mixed opinion on whether to case it or not.  For PE it's highly recommended to avoid blobing, but for other varieties not so much. So I decide to roll a dice and skip casing altogether.

I just mean putting a thin top layer of coir over exposed grains. No big deal. Casing is a different thing completely. You can case with jiffy after colonization for the PE.

I'm growing some APE as well as some PE in a few boxes. The last round of APEs were fun, but didn't get very big. Also they were slow - the Ape's only flushed twice while the Mazapatecs growing in tandem flushed 5 times. They finally contamed.

Maybe a light bit of Coir on top ( maybe 1/4 inch ? ) would help with some of these issues? when do you add it? durring the boxing - or after the spawn has colonized?

In experience does myc respond well to a light cover of coir after it's all white on top and it's been awhile, like maybe after the first flush?

So you can case APE in a lite layer of coir, coir and vermiculite, jiffy mix and Vermiculite. A casing can be what ever you want to add a non nutrious substrate layer to the top of you colonized tub. I prefer to case right before pinning other wise your just adding a layer that the Mycelium will colonize. The purpose of a casing to to add a nother layer for hydration to the pin set or Knott formations. Also helps create the proper micro climate.

Just one of my PE clones I took from a particular tub. All Different phenotypes of multispore SW pe

I have been naming things with 2 letters, and use different combinations for each tub and then I use numbers for the clones taken from a particular tub.

I haven't had much time so PR 1, 2 and 4 cultures are still in the fridge, haven't grown them out yet.

I have a picture somewhere of the PR 3 fruit the clone came from but couldn't find it when I took a quick look


Anyway here's a tub update. I plucked a couple of the mature fat asses but this I will probably harvest completely before work tonight. Well see.

I've been exhausted and all my tubs are in stacks of fives so I've been slacking on monitoring everything as much as I should. Just stumbled across these :lol:

Couple more tubs of varying maturity. Same clone (pr3)



Also in case anyone is interested all my grows these days are wheat to straight coir. PE tubs always get a casing but my timing on some were pretty shit this time around. I'll take some pics of the more blobby tubs later. I use 4 pounds of wheat per spawn bag. One bag and one brick coir to each 50 litre tub.

I also don't pasteurize my casing anymore. Jiffy straight from the bags. No tubs have contaminated :super:

Also, I should probably clean up those aborts from the first flush. :facepalm:
