Who's the man with the fat gut and the red robes?
    #2091077 -

BOOOO - DAH!

how'd he get so fat? Is it propaganda to get us to convert or what? I mean, if you don't possess anything and all that buddha shit how do you become so well-fed? Here's how I see it:

There's a guy walking down the street. He has a shaved head and a weird red robe. He's begging for money and preaching that the world is a hell we all have to escape through cultivating ourselves in by jumping into a starvation-inducing meditation plan. The buddha plan. Would you feed him? I ... might.

But really, why fat? What's fat got to do with it? I don't see why the symbol of the Buddha needs to be fat. Please explain.

The real Buddha was most likely not fat at all.  That is simply how the Japanese have chosen to represent him(maybe something about their culture ).  Remember that Siddhartha(the Buddha) spent a great deal of time fasting, to the point where he could touch his abdomen and reach his spine.  He recovered from this after a while when he found the Middle Way and started eating small bowls of rice and other food.  He still would not have become nearly as fat as the images of him that you're think of.  BTW, the traditional robes of a Buddhist monk are ORANGE, not red.

EDIT: Does the guy in my avatar look fat to you?

Mixomatosis, I've noticed your trolling around here lately.

If you're going to start a discussion about Buddha, then at least have a semi-accurate knowledge of his teachings.

Wow, you're cynical to a depressing degree.

Doesn't it get depressing to be so resentful of what others think, feel and believe?

The fat guy that is always portrayed as buddha, isnt really buddha, his name is Hotei or something like that, i forget it he was supposed to be a real person or something made up, a kind of Zen Santa Clause. But the point is that he is not THE buddha

Also, when sitting properly, the lower back is pulled in which pushes the stomach out a bit, creating a pot-bellied look.

The fat gut symbolizes high spiritual energy which the Japanese believe the be cultivated around your center (where the gut is). Atleast thats my take on it :T

I'm totally all for asking all the questions you possibly can! But what gets me about this guy is that he has this air of superiority, like he's far beyond everyone in this room because he doesn't believe in anything that they do. He isn't questioning with an open mind, he's doing it in a sarcastic way and doesn't seem to be at all interested in the answers people are offering.

He's not discussing, he's just diminishing others.

Does the word stereotype ring a bell in that REALITY ?
He doesn't "need" to be fat, he is fat.
Jesus was jew, do you think he had blue eyes as many pictures and paintings show, some even make him blond. Watch a jew in Israel on the TV and see how most probably Jesus would have look like.
Btw, no flaming here !

not that i believe in that immaculate conception crap, but um, if some all powerful god did exist, and white people thought they were special or some shit, then there is no reason for Jesus not to be white, no matter where he was born (whatever you call it). i mean, we're talking divine powers here. im sure a hypothetical god can overrule our basic understanding of genetics and evolution

Odd how this topic moved from Buddha to Jesus. I guess it relates in a way.

Christianity didn't spread to white people until at least many hundred years later with the Holy Roman Empire in 800 under Charlamagne. No doubt Jesus was not caucasian, because there were (and are) no native caucasians in the area where Jesus was born (Israel - Judah - Jerusalem). He would've had dark brown/black hair, dark skin, and NOT blue eyes, that's for sure.

Every depiction of a fair-skinned, brown hair blue eyed Jesus is an artistic creation in the Middle Ages to appeal to the common serf to convince him to go to church. It just caught and spread, because White Christianity became so gosh darn important....(sarcasm)

It just seems like your resentment of Christianity and a hypothetical omnipotent God has gotten into your judgement of geography and ethno-history.

btw, I'm not defending Christianity, I'm defending unclouded analyzation.

He was referring to Mixomatosis. My statement had nothing to do with resenting what others believe.

"If you're going to start a discussion about Buddha, then at least have a semi-accurate knowledge of his teachings. "

i took that to be a bit resentful. if he wasn't referring to you, then i ungracefully accept my mistake, lol. and if he was, well, i don't really give a shit, because you just said you weren't being resentful, so i'm fine and dandy now :-)
