I saw this program on the sci fi channel about a church in the south that drinks strictnine (sp) and plays with snakes. the congregation claimed hundreds of bites where inflicted, but only if "you ain't living right" will you die. same with poison. supported by some karmic bible passage.

now, here's the actually strange part. the tv program guys said that they sent a sample of the poison to a lab and it was pure strictnine (sp). these hillbillys where gulping it. the host of the show posited several theories, mostly mind over matter type stuff. so my question is how could the hill billies dupe the lab?

Maybe it was a circular argument: Those who died "didn't have the right stuff", since they died. What more to say?

I can understand how a substance like psilocybin can be more dangerous for a person who is full of fear and hate, but hey, strychnine? And why on earth would anyone want to drink strychnine, what do they benefit from it?

Small amounts of strychnine have been used to "increase" sexual potentcy. Strychnine poisoning is frequently accompanied by strong erections.

This reminds me of an X-Files episode I saw. There was this girl, her father was the preacher of this snake-handling cult that followed God. She thought that what they were doing was wrong, so she left and converted to the (some sort of Reformed) church.
Then her boyfriend mysteriously dies, and all sorts of people start to die. The girl is pregnant, and she gives birth to a lot of little snakes. Scary shit. The reverend at the church delivers all these sermons and shit, and it starts showing snakes entering the rooms of the people that mysteriously die. Everyone thinks that her father, the leader of the snake cult, is leading the snakes to kill everyone. In the end, it turns out the reverend at the real church is the snake, basically some sort of demon, and etc, etc.
Sorry, it sort of seemed related. Anyone see it?

I know under hypnosis open heart surgery can be performed without anasthetic. My point being, perhaps this is an extreme instance of "mind over body".

There's a scene in "the holy mountain" where everyone in this freaky church is playing russian roulette, with the same idea (god will protect the innocent). This is by the same guy who did El Topo, alexandro jourdowsky (see pic).

How can a snake or a crow fuck you up? I saw this big indian picture and it had a big circle of light with beams of light coming out four different ways one beam had a picture of shrooms one beam had a crow the other ones had a snake and pot plants there were freaky pictures all around it like a naked indian smoking a peice pipe with its smoke gowing all over it. it had cows all kinds of weird shit. When you stair at it it fucks with your head.WTF????

Seems like tribe symbols. The snake is something to be feared, and so is the crow. They are powerful symbols.

The mushrooms and pot plants, may be contemporary... or just insightful.
