Repercussions of Poisoning a Church's Poison
    #3985613 - 03/29/05 03:42 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

In some southern fundamentalist Christian churches where snake handling is part of the ceremony, some members also drink arsenic to demonstrate that they are protected by the Holy Spirit. While a single dose of arsenic can kill you, it is possible to build up somewhat of a tolerance.

Here is my question: If I snuck in the church in the middle of the night and laced their poison with potassium cyanide, a poison many magnitudes more deadly, could I be charged with murder if discovered? Would I be considered immoral or would the parishioner's death be strictly due to lack of faith as they teach?

The proof is in the pudding.

You'd be tried and hung to dry assuming you were caught.

Tip: Don't get caught if you have intentions that nefarious

Would you be considered Immoral?
-To them yes... To yourself probably not for it was within your morals to do it in the first place.

Parishoners's death be due to the lack of faith they teach?
-If their was anything about god that protected them... surely the'd be more bold and be shooting themselves in the head proclaiming that god indeed saved them.... just a fun way to trick those that are ignorant.

Through what authority though? Man or God?

Or is it God working through Man... and the Devil working through the one proposing this scenario?

Edit:
Good is subjective  ... here we go again!

Or has God nothing to do with it at all? I still think that they should get a gun and point it at their head, pull the trigger, and try to determine if their "god" will protect them from that.

Swami, I don't understand why you go through these elaborate hypotheticals just to repeat the same point again and again that some people's religious beliefs are silly to you. What's going on there?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not offended by this post. Just concerned.

Don't worry. When you come to visit, I promise not to spike the Kool-Aid.

You know it was fun, albeit twisted, idea that I came up with. Do you think I would be legally cupable as a murderer?

Um, because I am a sicko in serious need of counseling?

What about people that brought questionable medical practices such as blood-letting to light? Should not silliness and illogic be exposed or should it be nurtured? Do you question the outrageousness of the War on Drugs or is that belief system cool with you? If so, please turn yourself in at the nearest police station or hospital.

Thank you.

if you did this, and not only did they survive, but did'nt even notice that anything was tampered with,,would you become a believer, swami?

A believer in what?

I'd believe that they did in fact survive drinking these poisons, as that would have evidence to support it. Would I believe that God protected them from the poison, since they drank it and did survive? Nei, I would not, as what could that belief be based upon? Indeed, he didn't die, but as one does not actually know what factor is at work to allow for his survival, one does not have enough information on which to support a belief.

The ones I have read about were using strychnine, not arsenic... though I donno what the toxicity difference is between the two... I never really studied poisons that much.

With respect to your question, I assume they would follow the teachings of Jesus: toss you in jail, judge you, find you guilty, and execute you for murder.

Because there was a high likelyhood that I would end up killing myself by accident.  This is the same reason I never went into nuclear physics.  Considering the number of times I have shocked myself, I am starting to suspect that electrical engineering wasn't such a safe choice either.

OK, OK, it would certainly open my eyes to more serious investigation. The next step would be to see if he/they could survive lead poisoning. "Go ahead preacher. Make my Day!'
