References to time as static
    #14569430 -

Why do people often refer to events in time as though they have a static position? As if there was actually a particular point in time in which something occurred. Can we realistically pin down time to a point? Does time have some sort of beginning and end along which a line can be drawn and then dissected? Or is it that humanity has a beginning and end so we project this quality onto time itself?

Yes, events do have specific places in time. Time is a physical dimension that we are just incapable of percieveing. Imagine a being that can only percieve two dimensions. If they were to see a sphere it would just look like a circle. This inability to percieve time as a dimension causes many false assumptions.

So you believe that outside of the human brain there is a point in time which contains any given event? Does that suggest that all future events already exist independent of us? And on what do you base this?

If there is no static position in time that events occur, how do you know when to go to work, school or anything else?

I don't have a good enough understanding of the theory behind this to give a good explanation.

Consensus. My human brain operates very similar to other human brains and so a consensus is reached around these similarities. Just like the word "apple" is a symbolic representation of something both our brains can perceive.

Depends if time is quantized or not. If it is, then events do have a specific start and end point.

Either way, time is relative so our ideas of localizing events in time are probably flawed.

For practical purposes though, I ate lunch at noon and my alarm will ring at 9:oo am.
