God was in Christ. Jesus was not God. There is a profound difference. For one, when the Jesus of the Gospels (Jesus wrote nothing) alluded to the Divine "I AM," He was not referring to his temporal identity, but the Eternal Logos that was mysteriously (according to orthodox Christian theology) conjoined to the temporal man. To see Jesus, the man, or formulate erroneous statements like Jesus was God (the 'was' already specifies time, in a past tense, which is completely erroneous, since God exists in an Eternal Present), is not only wrong and idolatrous, but will forever prevent any real communion with the other two faiths of The Book - Judaism and Islam.
