"More enlightened" is a far cry from "I am enlightened", though.
-------------------- "A warrior is a hunter. He calculates everything. That's control. Once his calculations are over, he acts. He lets go. That's abandon. A warrior is not a leaf at the mercy of the wind. No one can push him; no one can make him do things against himself or against his better judgment. A warrior is tuned to survive, and he survives in the best of all possible fashions." ― Carlos Castaneda

Full Enlightenment is different from Cessation or Nirvana. The latter come from the liberation from ego and all suffering. Full Enlightenment is a superior mind, with the power to understand, control and manifest all things, which is dedicated to the task of bringing happiness and liberation to all other beings.
The reason this is considered a higher Enlightenment is because the liberation does not happen on behalf of the self, but rather for others. In this way it avoids the subtle imprints of selfishness that Hinayanist, or solitary paths fail to completely destroy. Enlightenment on behalf of the individual self is somewhat of a contradiction in terms.

2. "We were feeling pretty good so we decided to smoke a few bowls..."
3. "I had to be real quiet because my parents were asleep upstairs..."

stop talking and you'll hear it
and like others have said, I don't think enlightenment is a place so much as a relative observation. It is gradient and infinite, although, in a sense, we are all already there as one being.
really doesn't matter though
be happy and share the fun

Is enlightenment something that can be expressed? or is it something that is gained?

I keep wondering: is there a thing like gradual enlightenment or is there just some kind of bang and it all happens in no time ? Well whatever, it?ll turn out different than I imagine anyhow. But still I?m interested, what do you guys think ?

There are both gradual, and non-gradual approaches to the path of enlightenment.
But generally if one wakes up instantainiously, that realization does'nt last for long as one has to constantly train in that state to become familair anf stable with that realization.
The gradual path requires the accumilation of both merit and wisdom, through positive actions and meditation. Of course i am speaking purely within a buddhist context.
