Question: Whats the purpose of interest in astronomy?
    #13470642 -

At the moment we are not a space faring civilization and whether or not we will colonize other planets is uncertain at the moment. Since we aren't traveling around in space like they do in scifi movies what is the purpose of even bothering looking at the stars and being aware of planets in the sky and stuff like that? What is the source of peoples fascination with the stars, whats the purpose of it?

Whats the purpose of interest in astronomy?

It helps answer some of the most basic questions humans have ever asked, like what is our place in the universe, what is its history and ultimate fate, are we alone?

There are practical benefits too. The development of optical systems to observe the cosmos has improved microscopes used to treat and cure diseases. The drive for highly sensitive CCD imaging chips used in astronomy that now find their way into your cell phone and digital camera.

The anomalous precession in the orbit of the planet Mercury was one of Einstein's motivations in formulating Relativity Theory. This in turn improved the theory of Orbital Mechanics, without which communications, weather, and GPS satellites would not exist.

It was observation of our sun and the stars that first hinted at the power stored in the nucleus of atoms and led to the development of nuclear power plants. This in turn led indirectly to high power lasers, transistors, computer CPUs, and MRI machines.

I could write a book on the direct and side benefits to humans of studying the cosmos, but I think you get the picture.

Republican Values:

1) You can't get married to your spouse who is the same sex as you.
2) You can't have an abortion no matter how much you don't want a child.
3) You can't have a certain plant in your possession or you'll get locked up with a rapist and a murderer.

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.

Man has been looking up at the stars and marveling at it's mysteries since the beginning.  We are made from stars. How could you not think that it is cool.  August is especially entertaining because there is a pretty extensive meteor shower every year.
