Re: Being "In The Zone" [Re: BrainChemistry]

Yes, the zone is great.

I have some great memories of being in the zone, be in while performing physical activities, sharing moments with people, and generally just feeling like the coolest, most talented and limitless version of myself.

I sometimes think that being in the zone is when you still your mind, and it has to do with your mood.  Usually if I'm in an extroverted mood, I find myself more likely to be in the zone in social situations.  While being in an introverted mood, my internal dialogue is more likely to reach deeper and more unbounded trains of thought, that I can liken to being in the zone.  I don't know.  You don't think what you do.  You feel what you do.

For instance, if I am in the 'zone' and speaking to people of no particular age or sex, I don't think about what I'm going to say before I say it, I somehow become extremely clever and witty, confident, poetic and I just sound damn good.  This is usually short lived, though relived consistently enough to know that I must somehow harness the zone to relive it at will, for it indeed exists.

I don't think just believing your in the zone will put you there.

Thats like saying "I believe I'm enlightened, therefore I am."

Then why is it that it doesn't raise any doubt when the same pattern is done with a negation...
I.e. "I believe I'm not in the zone, therefore I'm not." or "I believe I'm not enlightened, therefore I'm not." Why are beliefs that are tied to a negation any more real than ones that are not 'not'? Could there be a process going on when something is negated that isn't happening when something is not negated?

That's cool; sounds like you're pretty good at basketball. Doesn't sound like you're really in the zone though, or if you are, that it doesn't last very long

Its hard to be in the zone if your just sitting watching TV like I am now...

Every time I try to put myself in the zone, it doesn't work. It's just something that happens when you really put yourself into something. Because when you really, deeply put yourself into doing something, the boundaries that separate you from whatever it is you're doing start to loosen up a bit. I don't think that's something you can force or intentionally do. Or at least it's not something I can do.

What is this zone, and how do you get there?

If we knew this we would be there and stay there.

True but the zone has certain traits that you can try to mimic, and maybe it makes it easier to get there.

Like most people have said in this thread, the zone is kind of like a meditative state.

What do you do when you meditate? You clear your mind of all useless thoughts...focus on your breathing, on your body, on being still.

Well thats what I'm talking about. I want to try to put myself into this meditative state as often as possible by getting rid of all the useless chatter thats always in my brain.

That, I think, is something we can control, at least to some extent.

zone is a flow state. Flow state occurs when you are totally absorbed in the moment.

That's not how I meditate. I don't want to clear my mind of thoughts. Maybe my thoughts become less frequent and even stop briefly every once in a while, but I'm not trying to clear my mind of all thoughts. I'm not sure if that's something we can even do.

But, in all seriousness, it sounds like an interesting experiment, so please do update this thread with how things are going.

Then you're there. One aspect of this absorbtion is the lessening or cessation of random thinking.

Alright, well maybe I just see that as the starting point.

You can't begin to meditate if your brain is stuffed up with noise.

But once you get rid of all the noise, you can get to what you actually want to concentrate on.

And like Icelander said...its a state of flowing. The thoughts simply flow from you. One thought doesn't stay in your head. It comes in, does what it needs to do, and flows out to be replaced by another useful thought.

We do know it, but most people don't know it consciously.  "The zone" is now, the only moment that ever is.  To stay there, turn off your thoughts.  Envelop yourself in the now without thinking about it.

You can stop thinking without meditation, although meditation/drugs can show you how powerful your mind can be.

Spot on.

Icelander said:

Being completely in the zone is not just lessening thought, it is the cessation of thought.  You become a mirror that reflects life.  Your mind no longer fills the void, life in the now fills the void.  You become life in the now.  Let it in, let it out.  Don't think about it, because you cannot know what life is.  You can only become life, and only when you are not thinking.

Well that's what I meant of course, consciously. And to say turn off your thoughts is the same as telling a river not to run. Not that easy.

I don't agree with you that thoughts need completely cease to be in a flow state as I have been there and was thinking but more in images than in words and only what was necessary to continue the situation that put me into this flow.

I suspect our mind never does cease to think on some level. As I have experiences that lead me to believe my mind is always dreaming (as in asleep dreaming) but my so called awake consciousness has layered over it and obscured it until I sleep again. I know others have had this experience, to awake and still find the mind dreaming, which slowly fades into the background.

Yeah I think when your in the zone you dont even think about it, or if you do its like "damn I'm in the zone" and you move on to following through with what you were doing. I find myself in the zone when I wait until the very last moments to do homework or study for test. I seem to have the optimal level of concentration and finish at exactly the right time.

Probably the latter..
Ah ..
My passion for justice is far stronger than the desire to own noobs on the basketball court..
We little guys gotta stand up for ourselves ya know..

Besides.. when something like that happens without getting too much out of hand..
Ill play even better  just because ive been wronged.
Perhaps that is another  "zone" ?

I know why you get into fights jivjan.

When people expect you to react a certain way, and you don't do it, or if you stand up for yourself, it gets under their skin.

The tall basketball players are probably used to being able to intimidate everyone else and shove them around, and when you don't act intimidated, and instead shove THEM around...well, they feel the need to stand up for their selves.

But IMO, thats the way it should be. You have to bring intensity to a sport if you want it to be fun, otherwise its like a bunch of sissies passing a pigskin around.

you have to leave the thoughts on,
you need them to work through you,
but you don't always want to be lost in them, to have the recollections and projections surround you and overtake what is happening.

it's like finding the volume switch over and over
