Being "In The Zone"
    #9984298 -

What is this zone, and how do you get there?

When people say they are "in the zone", it usually happens when they are playing sports or something requiring coordination, and their mind is so completely focused on their objective that they perform spectacularly and with effortless ease.

I was thinking about this today, and the last time I was in the "zone". It was playing soccer, the day after a long night of drinking. I remember barely wanting to go play, but I forced myself. When I was out there, my brain only had enough energy to focus on playing soccer. I wasn't worrying about anything else....which isn't normal for me.

It felt really good even though I was kind of hung over, but I got to thinking about it later. Being in the "zone" sounds much like a state of enlightenment to me. Your brain is in perfect coordination with your body, it is focused only on the present moment, and what your current objective is. When you're in the zone, energy flows from you effortlessly to perform exactly how you want.

Does anyone know this feeling I describe? I'm sure others have been "in the zone" before, it doesn't even have to be sports. You could be in the zone while taking a test, and just have answers pop into your head as if by magic.

Why can't we hold onto that feeling though? If you could always be "in the zone", would that not be like being in a state of enlightenment?

That is my normal state of being. Makes me feel sad for the rest.

How else could I come up with a quip for any post within milliseconds?

Hi-
I know the feeling you describe. I don't get it often, but it feels great when I do. Sometimes if I have a ton of errands to run or am working on a lot of homework I can feel that way,  but like you said, I can't hold onto it for long.

I think it is a hypnotic state, like Nebraska.

Does that state of being work equally well for contributing usefully to the discussion?

Yeah, being in the zone is a pretty cool experience. I'd say it's akin to being in a deep state of concentration...maybe "samadhi" in Buddhist terminology. When you're really in the zone, it's like a gentle dissolution of boundaries between you, the doer, and whatever it is that you're doing: soccer, sex, etc. Of course, you can still be concentrating on the game or whatever but not be in the zone.

It's a good question you pose. what do YOU think it is that blocks us from being always 'in the zone'?

I don't think it could be anything other than ego.

The ego is what distracts from getting in touch with the "inner calmness" that people achieve while meditating, and while "in the zone".

If you're not telling yourself what to do in your head, if you aren't arguing with yourself "Is this best way, or is that the best way?"...if you just DO it without thinking, that is being in the zone and that, I think, is being unaffected by your ego.

Maybe we all taste a little bit of enlightenment whenever we get in the zone.

From "Zen in the Art of Archery"
Quote:
The archer ceases to be conscious of himself as the one who is engaged in hitting the bull's-eye which confronts him. This state of unconscious is realized only when, completely empty and rid of the self, he becomes one with the perfecting of his technical skill, though there is in it something of a quite different order which cannot be attained by any progressive study of the art...

"Completely empty and free of the self."

Or perhaps, completely whole and in touch with the self?

It really could be likened to meditation of some sorts..
The thing is.. i can feel the testosterone in the air..
I always get into fights :frown:
Im 5'10 .. unstoppable !
And the big guys like to rough me up cuz im too fast..
I dont mind.. i like rough games..
But then.. they will call a foul when i do the same thing and i just cant help but saying something im obviously not supposed to say to someone thats 6'4 .. And i never back away from a fight..

Maybe that can cripple the enlightening part of being in the zone.
They dont like it when your in the zone..

I think I'm going to make a conscious effort to put myself in the zone as much as possible.

At least whenever I'm applying myself to something.

Its hard to be in the zone if your just sitting watching TV like I am now...

Being in the zone means your attention power is having a good moment. Buddhist breath meditation is excercise for this

How could someone know when they weren't in the zone? It seems by the way that people use the phrase "in the zone" that it's context dependent. But it also seems possible that it could be generalised to all contexts. After all, in many different ways we often completely focus on the objective and perform spectacularly with effortless ease, but then take it for granted or not notice. It seems a bit like teaching a fish about water, the simplest way is to take it out of the water.

With 'the zone' being quite an intangible place, what if someone was to just believe they were always in the zone. Could having that belief as a starting place in and of itself influence how the person focuses, influences how the person performs, and influences how effortless performing was? Hmmmm...  What's stopping people from just believing they are already in the zone? Sounds like something fun to play with.

Anytime I've ever been "in the zone", I've always known it immediately because its not the mental state I'm normally in.

I don't think just believing your in the zone will put you there.

Thats like saying "I believe I'm enlightened, therefore I am."

Its like your fish and water analogy. The fish doesn't think "I'm in the water." It just thinks it where its supposed to be....its "in the zone". When you take it out of the water....it suddenly realizes that stuff it was swimming around in was key to its survival and tries desperately to get back there.

Maybe the zone is like the water for humans. Only we're pulled out of the water at a young age and trained to think that where we live now is normal....but its not, the water is. Occasionally we get back in and relish in the joy of it.

I have heard that when you are driving and you get home and don't remember driving home, you are in a hypnotic state. I think that may be the zone. An enlightened Zen state is harder to come by.

"The zone" is the now, the present moment.  Most, if not all things that people do serve to get a taste of the present, or to get in "the zone."  Sometimes, by giving into the thirst for further existence, those who dwell on the past and prepare for the future miss the present all-together.  "The zone" or the now is not a state of mind, it is without thinking, it is being.

Enlightenment is living completely in the now and understanding everything in the now.
