Pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone
    #7258867 -

I am rarely able to do this.

I know my comfort zone well and I know its bounds instinctively. And by and large, even when I am embarking on a psychedelic experience, I am doing so with the hope that it will be a positive experience and a chance for growth - without pushing me too far out of my comfort zone. Of course, it always does anyway, but I am very good at regrouping and getting back in the zone.

What are the ways in wish you push yourself outside your comfort zone? I liked Huehue's post about taking high doses of psychedelics and making sure you're out of that comfort zone, mentally and physically. It is frightening and envigorating, and a way to learn new things about yourself.

What I have come to realize is that I am uncomfortable in the 'comfort zone' I have created for myself. My comfort zone is a place where neurosis, detachment, self-deprecation, blind following of cultural trends, etc. are the norm; this is what I have been taught is the most comfortable way to experience reality.

I'll describe my comfort zone the best that I can. It is a space in which the things that happen around me are random and coincidental and nothing more, where life is meaningless, occassionally entertaining but mostly vaguely or acutely frustrating, where human beings are not fully recognized as anything more than obstructions to some vague goal or future enlightenment. It is a place where I can and regularly do find any excuse to go against my instincts and gorge on food, get drunk, and engage in other forms of excess. It is a place where I can sink comfortably into my fantasies about the past and future (both my own and humanity's) and hide myself in the books I read and the movies I watch. It is a place where the people I know (how preposterous - as if I actually 'know' them at all) are taken for granted and my own insecurities are regularly projected onto them so I can avoid dealing with them as the actual divine beings they are.

Outside of my comfort zone I find life and death constantly in the balance - indeed there is no difference between them. I begin to recognize how thoroughly I project myself onto others, and am able to interact with others as if they were actually as real as me (the most shocking and horrifying thought of all to the Ego). There is spontaneity, cosmic humor, dread and the deepest despair, oceanic joy, interconnectedness, intense pain and longing, animalistic emotion, gooey dripping sexuality, uncloaked, formless femininity, cavernous darkness, heavenly beauty, a rupturing of the distinction between the inner and outer worlds, and the first glimpses of recognition that there is ALWAYS a pervasive silence and stillness amidst the maelstrom. It is a rare state to be in.

Tell me about your comfort zone, what it's like to step outside it, and the ways in which you do.

“Strengthened by contemplation and study,
I will not fear my passions like a coward.
My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,
to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

I have made it my life's mission, and I practice it where I can. Recently I have pushed myself far out of my comfort zone and I have found that it just keeps getting easier because the rewards are so great.

Quote:
To be a warrior is not a simple matter of wishing to be one. It is rather an endless struggle that will go on to the very last moment of our lives. Nobody is born a warrior, in exactly the same way that nobody is born an average man. We make ourselves into one or the other.

-- Carlos Castaneda

--------------------
"A warrior is a hunter. He calculates everything. That's control. Once his calculations are over, he acts. He lets go. That's abandon. A warrior is not a leaf at the mercy of the wind. No one can push him; no one can make him do things against himself or against his better judgment. A warrior is tuned to survive, and he survives in the best of all possible fashions." ― Carlos Castaneda

Your comfort zone doesn't sound very comfortable. You say it's a place where life is meaningless and where you go against your instincts, etc. Why do you call this place "comfort zone"?

For me, the comfort zone is where and whenever I can provide for myself and my loved ones. I go outside this zone sometimes, for example when I am between jobs and I have to live on money that I saved from an earlier comfort zone.

I try to be about stepping out of the comfort zone. But I look at it more as a time where you might be thinking you don't know what to do at that point. More of a situation in which you are faced with an insecurity, or different reactions so you can learn from these reactions.

During a recent trip I experienced reality as if I had gone to far, and didn't know if I could handle what was happening to me. This was horribly uncomfortable and was the last bad trip I experienced.

But I look at life in a way that stepping out of your comfort zone is the the only way to know your true path.

The most defining factor of my comfort zone is living in accordance with others expectations. That really has a hold on me; I have a ton of trouble saying or acting how I want to in front of most people. It's suffocating. I guess its a divided comfort zone.

By the way you really are an excellent writer.
