Why am I pushing your buttons?

Because I want to let you in on a little secret that I believe to be true.
Actually I'm not selfish. I want us all to succeed. I'm trying you get your attention. Not to me and what I'm saying but to your response and internal reaction to what I am saying.
I'll bet even this post will push buttons.

You are not supposed to use facts and logic in that forum, didn't you know? Just check them at the door along with your common sense and practicality.

Yesterday, I made a solitary post in MRP in reply to a thread started by a guy who claimed he had been talking to aliens since childhood (no doubt, a friend of Shroomisms). He made this insanely long post talking about how he's convinced he is put on earth to help usher in the changes of 2012. All I said was: "Get help." and I was banned from the ENTIRE WEBSITE. I guess Middleman thought I crossed the line by implying that this guy was crazy. Then today I saw a post by Middleman, where he was talking about how he has been on alien spacecraft. So, that explains that...

Well, if this is true, then that's pretty noble of you. But, I have to question if trying to get people to react is the best way to bring their attention to their reactions and their mental processes. In some situations, no doubt it is, but I doubt that's the case for all situations.

Actually, the thought didn't even arise until you mentioned it. But you're right, you don't.
I guess my post was more of a general reply, directed towards that approach, not to you specifically.

You push buttons because you enjoy doing it. Don't use too many noble rationalizations for it. It can be a useful tool, but your enjoyment of that process is your primary driving factor. You have pushed my buttons so much over the last year that many of them just quit working.

A warrior is tuned to survive, and he survives in the best of all possible fashions." ― Carlos Castaneda

You are free to discuss the concept of button-pushing & whether it can be beneficial. Separate the idea from the poster & there is plenty of room for discussion.
What do you think? In general, do people in your life who push your buttons teach you anything? Are they just annoying, or have you learned about yourself from your reactions to their behavior?

Some button-pushers are not conscious of their pushing, and are just "doing their thing" in proximity to you. Others might be testing you, or trying to teach you.
Does it matter what their intentions are, if you can derive the same lessons either way?
For example, I learn a lot about my current state of consciousness when I have to wait in line. The checkout clerk & the people ahead of me in line are not doing this to me, they are just there. If I am impatient and caught up in self-importance, I may project negative qualities onto them. If I am relaxed & in the flow, I will smile and watch the parade.

certain "lessons" i guess could be derived regardless of the pushers intentions....but i think there are more lessons to be learned from looking at all intentions.

that and i'm not sure where to start either.
what makes you know that you are pushing buttons anyway? what does that mean anyway? some kind of abnormal physiological state, if so what are the indications of that?

and why is that?
the use of a word changes the emotions or thoughts of a person? or is it just more likely that the emotions and thoughts of a person who flames has had their buttons pushed?
either way you don't know whether or not you pushed them (to assume you did, to me...is a bit arrogant) unless the person admitted to it....even then their definition of it may not be equivalent to your idea.
so what is pushing someone's buttons? how would you know you did actually push them? would thinking that you pushed someone's buttons, and not actually pushing them, mean that you pushed your own buttons?

I think certain things can be learned from someone pushing your buttons. But the things learned are patience and how to put up with someone. There are ways to help someone come to a realization without pushing their buttons.

the use of a word changes the emotions or thoughts of a person? or is it just more likely that the emotions and thoughts of a person who flames has had their buttons pushed?
either way you don't know whether or not you pushed them (to assume you did, to me...is a bit arrogant) unless the person admitted to it....even then their definition of it may not be equivalent to your idea.
so what is pushing someone's buttons? how would you know you did actually push them? would thinking that you pushed someone's buttons, and not actually pushing them, mean that you pushed your own buttons?
Er... about that PM discussion. Nevermind.

So we go from pushing the buttons, to pushing the door, eh?

I couldn't find those classic scenes where they push each others noses and eyes, then kicking the legs and such :-) That's the result of button-pushing
Hehe, yes and in modern times we enjoy pushing buttons through some kind of 'doors' (medium), to better hide from the consequences if it comes out that this pushing was not accidentally but intentionally

Yes, when push comes to shove.

I just wonder if a person that pushes buttons in an intended way like Ice describes, really is that 'selfless' as he pretends. It could be selfish quite as well.
What matters is the question if it's good to get buttons pushed generally. And there I think we have to discern if it is done intentionally or 'naturally'. For 'natural' causes, I think it is generally good. For intentional 'causes' I am not so sure about and tend to say it's not good. Now, what's the difference.... I am contemplating about. --- beep out ---

I do it to learn and have fun. When I feel neither is possible (whether right or wrong) I tend to ignore them.

so were you just telling us why you do it....or asking us why we allow our buttons to be pushed...
and i was merely saying that...even though it may seem like that is what you are infact doing.....you may not be pushing the buttons...but i guess it is obvious most of the time....

Bingo, one of the reasons at least.

TV isn't interactive, unless it's porn. So I prefer to spend time at the shroom.
