Outside the Comfort Zone

True spiritual growth can only happens outside of the place we call our comfort zone. Inside the comfort zone we are too sure of ourselves...too sure of what is real and what isn't to grow in any real way. Comfort will only allow one to sink deeper into their prejudices and misconceptions by affirming our view of reality, but this is not growth. Often people mistake this stagnation for maturity of thought and interpret it as growth when in reality it is decay. This process of moving beyond our comfort zone requires either a real push on the part of the individual or a tremendous trauma or crisis. Out beyond the comfort zone it is not safe...nor is it predictable. Insanity and darkness lurk there hand in hand with ecstatic liberation. This should not mean that we should shun all comfort, but that we should know when it is time to walk to the edge and look over the side.
-------------------- "A warrior is a hunter. He calculates everything. That's control. Once his calculations are over, he acts. He lets go. That's abandon. A warrior is not a leaf at the mercy of the wind. No one can push him; no one can make him do things against himself or against his better judgment. A warrior is tuned to survive, and he survives in the best of all possible fashions." ― Carlos Castaneda

I think you're just trying to scare me into being uncomfortable.
What if my comfort zone is insane and dark, and what if insanity just tells you that its ecstatic liberation because it is crazy?
The edge. Hah.
There is a ledge behind the edge. Keith landed on it.

No thanks, heights make me uncomfortable. I've never heard of a climbing accident in a recliner...

Quote:
When I was a child I caught a fleeting glimpse, Out of the corner of my eye. I turned to look but it was gone. I cannot put my finger on it now. The child is grown, the dream is gone. I have become comfortably numb.
Just as a limb "falls asleep" when you don't move it, a life becomes numb when you don't live it.

almost every time i drive a car i go very far out of "the comfort zone" even with airconditioning and leather seats (used to be leather seats - now i am on suzuki plastic fibre seats) even with cd and radio; at around 60 mph i begin to lose it.
this is a terrible place to find oneself repeatedly turning into acolyte and sage:
I always regret gowing spiritually while driving yet must do so every workday. it makes me burp. some say being close to death is very spiritual for me it is a source of nausea.
I become SEE SICK

Most people are comfortably numb....

I thought this might be somewhat relevant...
"A principle is a principle and in no case can it be watered down because of our incapacity to live it in practice. We have to strive to achieve it, and the striving should be conscious, deliberate and hard." - Mahatma Gandhi

And as things fell apart, Nobody paid much attention... - David Byrne, '(Nothing But) Flowers' from the Talking Heads' album, 'Naked'

Just the way our leaders want them to be. Isn't the Internet and TV great?

I move a lot of limbs, brush, weeds, and dirt. Does that count?

Yes, I get carsick, too. Especially in the back seat where I am far from being in control of my own destruction.

Jung "So really, ordinary reality is a kind of chemical habit, sanctioned by culture, which says it's okay to use certain drugs, eat certain foods, and have certain sexual behaviors. However, when you transcend all this pre-conditioning by returning to the original wisdom of the animal body, then you discover this immense dimension of opportunity. For some people, it is a frightening risk. To me, that's the psychedelic experience." Terence McKenna
