The universe exists because we are observing it.

pretty cool video of clips of some pretty trippy quantum mechanics.

I didn't watch the video yet, but the title made me think of Shroedinger's Cat, a science thought experiment that I like a lot

People that have't watched the video, watch it.  Its much food for thought

I've never quite understood how conscious observation has been quantified in quantum mechanics.  How can we meaningfully talk about it if all we have to go on are equations?

well... it took me only about a 7 day dissociative trip to realize everything that was just said in this video. Apparently for these people it has taken microscopes and years of research.

I have not watched the video, but there is no great mystery that measuring (i.e. observing) something changes it.

Stick a thermometer in a body of a water and if the thermometer is warmer, it will add heat to the body of water; if it is cooler it will chill the body of water.

Stick this thermometer in a tub and the effect will be minimal. Stick it in one drop of water and the effect will be easily noted. Stick it in one molecule of water and - well you get the picture.

Thats not really the point of it.  The point of the argument is that the act of us being able to be aware of the external world allows it to be there.  I could take this on a whole philosophical tangent about the "world is made of language" but i won't go there.

And what an easily-refuted point it is.

What if every quark in the Universe was observing itself with an omnipresent quanta of consciousness?

All is One, man.  :hippie:

Please refute.  According to quantum mechanics with out an observer there would just be this expanding super position of possibilities with nothing definite ever actually happening.

Ive thought about this and Ive concluded that we are seeing our own thoughts. The mind can not register microscopic objects when they are viewed microscopically. So it appears as waves or like a bunch of potential somethings because you dont see with your eyes, you see with your brain. Your eyes cant inform the brain of microscopic objects because obviously you cant see microscopic things. So since you actually see with you brain, when you are trying to view something microscopic microscopically you are seeing you own thoughts. Your brain doesnt know where the hell the object is or what the hell its doing because the eyes cant detect microscopic things.

So then when you go to measure it, your bringing your attention to this mysterious blob of probability. You are now zooming in on this blob and thus bringing it to your eyes attention so it now can be detected morphing it into an object.

Hope that made atleast alittle bit of sense...

Theres no disputing that the universe is a holographic fractal though.

An observation need not have any consciousness behind it.  Particles interacting counts as an 'observation'.

Right, that was my impression... I didn't think it was even possible to coherently talk about conscious observation as opposed to unconscious observation in the framework of physics.

An observer is anything that can cause a wave function to collapse.  It does this by reducing to a single one of the states after interaction with the external world.  Something can only be in a single state when an observer measures it.

Are you serious? Do you actually think about what you wrote?

Very sad.
