The misuse of the term "evolution" is only exceeded by the misuse of the term "quantum," or perhaps "organic."  To apply a word which has a particular meaning to a process which is unrelated to said meaning is fairly absurd.  What is wrong with the term "progress," which actually means what you are trying to describe?  Why the necessity to insist upon a "new" evolution, when an applicable term already exists?

Well, whatever New Age label one chooses to apply to progress, it does not become evolution.  Nor does the "old" evolution cease once the so-called "new" evolution begins.  We can work on progress as individuals as much as we like, but our evolutionary process remains the same.

Im not sure he's talking about simply progress. With the introduction of nanotechology, cloned/engineered bodyparts, who can say in a matter of decades these and offshoot sciences wont be altering our genes? Thus while not evolution by natural selection, its still evolution of a sort. Which I guess is why he labelled it "old" and "new"

Nope, still progress. Genetic manipulation via technology is not evolution.

Veritas, you're just jealous that you can't control your own personal evolution. Buddhist monks can achieve it by following a strict diet of organic quantum food. Can your "science" explain that? :dancing:

In the realm of the brain, the word evolution may be an apt term, if only it starts as a metaphor, it may become a definition as language continues to change through time (like so many other words have in the past).

This is because the process of evolution as it applies to a population of individual organisms in an environment is very analagous to a population of neurons struggling to survive in a developing nervous system or even a population of synapses in an adult nervous system.

taking the next jump, the population of synapses and there dynamic connections may very well determine much of human thought, behavior and 'progress'.

So whereas 'progress' implies some kind of linear process, 'evolution' describes a more complex non linear process. While the exact definition of evolution may refer to genetic material, there is yet no word for the same process in the brain, so what better word than evolution? I guess you could use 'neuro-evolution' , but it seems the process of evolution will be applied to many things besides genes, and at that point evolution will refer to the general process, and not contextually with the processed material.

of course all the details of neuro evolution will not be the same as genetic evolution, the general process can be quite similar.

and as a metaphor the word can convey much more, especially for those who think in a vague manner (as is often the case!).

It's called "neurological development."  As it is not passed on to the next generation, it is not related to evolution.  Similarly, the qualities of tables made from wood are not possessed by the oak trees which grow from acorns that fell from the tree used to make the tables.
