See, this is exactly what I'm talking about with environment encompassing the species in it. Money is only a survival tool because we have created a society based around it. It is meaningless without consensual behavior to back it up. There is nothing in our genetics about making money.

The foundation of the evolutionary process is nothing other than adapting to the current situation, and capitalism happens to be ours. The fact that our societal function is established by man makes it no less a part of nature. Of course there is nothing in genetics that is specifically implemented for making money, as it is an abstract, manmade concept, but genetic factors do dictate the extent to which we will be able to acquire it. Wealth or even moderate financial success does not guarantee survival or prosperity by any means, but nor does intelligence, physical strength, or any other single quality beneficial to surival, though each can be extremely helpful in an environment in which they can be effectively applied.

I do not deny that evolution is based on adaptation. What I am saying is that adaptation cannot be reduced to genetics. In fact, adaptation to new circumstances requires that we change our behavior from what we instinctively are inclined to do. Capitalism did not come from some source outside of us. It is the product of human social interactions, and was not simply something destined to occur(I would recommend reading Max Weber's essay The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism for further explanation). There was no need to adapt to capitalist society until human beings created it.

So you don't think that human social interactions can be interpreted on a genetic level?

They have a genetic component, but can they be reduced to genetics? Absolutely not.

(I would recommend reading Max Weber's essay The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism for further explanation).

i think marshall sahlins critique of sociobiology also makes some interesting points on this topic.

To thread:

Was the big-bang determined ? Are our decisions determined ?

For one, many causes are interwoven, so what is the original cause you can relay your determinision to ? If a butterfly can cause storms, what can an elephant-fart do ?

Second, if I am a slave and break free, I violated the determinism of my master as my master and mine as a slave. Suddenly the rules of my master have no effect anymore and I am free to make different decisions or go into another slavery until I break free again.
BUT, servants of their OWN accepted cause commune together AND there are guys, who know something better. You are FREE to select your master, without being a slave !

We are determined to freedom.

We discussed this in my government class, and I particularly liked the response of one of my classmates. She said that although she may even believe in intelligent design herself, and even though she thinks that people should at least be made aware of the idea (without having it taught as truth), intelligent design has no place in a science class because it is not accepted as fact among the majority of the scientific community. Rather, a separate religious studies class should be offered that observes many different religions in an objective manner.

Finally, some intelligence in the Intelligent Design debate::

Dover School Board Rescinds 'Intelligent Design' Policy As Alternative to Evolution

Newly-elected members of the Dover (Pa.) Area School Board, from left, Judy McIlvaine, Larry Gurreri and Rob McIlvaine, vote unanimously in favor of rescinding the inclusion of "intelligent design" from the biology curriculum of Dover High School, Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006,during a meeting in Dover, Pa. DOVER, Pa. Jan 3, 2006 ? The Dover school board on Tuesday rescinded its policy of presenting "intelligent design" as an alternative to evolution in high school biology classes, two weeks after a federal judge found the concept was religious and not scientific.

There was no discussion by members of the Dover Area School Board before the voice vote Tuesday night.

The policy, approved in October 2004, required that a statement be read to students about "intelligent design" before ninth-grade lessons on evolution. The statement said Darwin's theory is "not a fact" and has inexplicable "gaps." It referred students to an "intelligent-design" book.

On Dec. 20, U.S. District Judge John E. Jones III sided with eight families who argued that "intelligent design," which attributes the existence of complex organisms to an unidentified intelligent cause, is biblical creationism in disguise.

The school board said it was trying to improve science education by exposing students to alternatives.

But the judge said the board's real purpose was "to promote religion in the public school classroom," and said intelligent design could not be taught as an alternative to evolution in biology classes.

Most of the school board incumbents who had defended the policy were ousted in the November election, replaced by candidates who pledged to eliminate it.

The policy and federal lawsuit added fuel to a national debate over "intelligent design."

2) You can't have an abortion no matter how much you don't want a child.
3) You can't have a certain plant in your possession or you'll get locked up with a rapist and a murderer.

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.
