Pinellas, Florida: Evolution's Not Enough
    #5124765 -

A majority of Pinellas parents who profess to follow the controversy say intelligent design should be taught in schools.

By DONNA WINCHESTER and RON MATUS

Published December 30, 2005

Many Pinellas County [Florida] parents want public schools to teach "intelligent design," the idea that life on Earth was produced by an unidentified intelligent agent, a St. Petersburg Times poll shows.

That sentiment runs contrary to Florida's current policy of teaching evolution, the theory developed by 19th century biologist Charles Darwin and accepted by nearly all scientists as the answer to how humans and other species originated and evolved.

Fifty-eight percent of the parents who said they have been following the national controversy over intelligent design told pollsters it should be taught "just like evolution."

Only 21 percent said intelligent design should not be taught.

"Being Christian, I believe there is a higher power," said Jackie Shields of St. Petersburg. "I agree (with) intelligent design more than evolution. It blows my mind to think we evolved over time. There's no such thing."

[Dip: this speaks only of your inability to think and says nothing about Evolution or ID.]

"New ideas develop," said Kathleen Helfand of Oldsmar, who also supports the teaching of intelligent design. "If there are other theories out there, kids should be able to entertain those theories along with whatever else is being taught."

[Dip: Hint, theories must be testable and falsifiable. ID is not a theory. Science 101.]

The Pinellas poll mirrors a national divide. But it also shows that intelligent design has gained mainstream support, even in a politically moderate county not known as a hotbed for Christian conservatives, who are often portrayed as intelligent design's core supporters.

Intelligent design proponents have "essentially cast it as a fairness issue," said Wesley Elsberry, a spokesman for the Oakland, Calif.-based National Center for Science Education. "There's nothing Americans are not, if not trying to be fair about things."

[Dip: Speaking of fairness, how many Sunday Schools are being required to teach Evolution side by side with ID?]

More than a third of the 617 parents polled during the last week of November said they haven't paid any attention to the debate over intelligent design. But 36 percent said they have paid some attention, and nearly one in four said they have paid "a lot" of attention.

Among those who professed some knowledge of the issue, about one in five were critical.

Teaching intelligent design is "about the stupidist thing I've ever heard of," said Robert Rusher of Clearwater, whose 11-year-old daughter attends Safety Harbor Middle School. "It seems like some people don't have enough to do."

Another 13 percent said intelligent design should be taught, but "not as science."

[Dip: BINGO! It should be taught in a World Religions or Philosophy class, not in a Science class.]

Leona Pfeiffer of Palm Harbor said she has no problem with her son, a student in the medical magnet at Palm Harbor University High, discussing it in a language arts class. But she thinks intelligent design has no place in a science class.

"It's not been proven," she said.

So far, intelligent design has not become an issue in Florida. But it is sparking heated debates elsewhere.

Last week, a federal judge in Pennsylvania ruled that a local school board's attempt to introduce the subject in science classrooms violated constitutional restrictions separating church and state. News stories billed the six-week trial as the 21st century sequel to the 1925 Scopes "Monkey Trial," which put evolution on the stand in Tennessee.

Meanwhile, public disputes have flared in more than two dozen other states, including Georgia, where courts are deciding whether the Cobb County school district can put labels saying evolution is "a theory, not a fact" on textbooks, and Kansas, where the state school board voted last month to redefine science in a way that critics say includes the supernatural.

[Dip: Maybe they should also put labels on books stating "This Is A Book". Duh! NOTHING in science is fact. If these people, who somehow feel qualified to dictate the science curriculum, knew the most seminal truth in science, they wouldn't have thought of putting stickers on books stating the painfully obvious.]

In Florida, one anticipated skirmish was recently postponed.

The Florida Department of Education decided a few weeks ago to delay a review of K-12 science standards, originally slated for next year, until 2007 or 2008, citing ongoing reviews of standards in other subject areas. Some observers expected the review to be a ripe opportunity for intelligent design supporters to argue for a change in the current standards, which don't cite evolution by name but reference its core principles.

Gov. Jeb Bush and Education Commissioner John Winn have declined to comment on intelligent design. But Bush, who enjoys strong support from Christian conservatives, said last week he doesn't think evolution should be included in the standards.

[Dip: Like father, like son. Drooling morons both.]

"I think people have different points of view and they can be discussed at school," Bush said. "They don't need to be in the curriculum."

In Pinellas, the artificial divide that pits evolution against other theories such as intelligent

[Dip: Amazingly, even the reporter is so ignorant of science that he calls ID a theory.]

design can put teachers on the spot, said Jason Tenbrink, a teacher at Countryside High School in Clearwater.

"I tell the students they should talk to their parents," he said. "I don't want to step on anybody's toes."

Part of the problem, Tenbrink said, is semantics.

"A lot of people say evolution is "just a theory,' " he said. "But a theory is something that is rigorously tested. Evolution has been tested, and it's something we can observe the results of. We cannot observe intelligent design."

Not all science educators agree.

Sherry Gerodimos, who teaches biology at Largo High School, said while she is "more comfortable siding with evolution," she was impressed with a DVD she received on intelligent design and has considered showing it to her students.

[Dip: An incompetent teacher. Anyone surprised?]

"It's offensive to me that biologists shove evolution down people's throats as the only answer," Gerodimos said. "If we're saying (intelligent design) should never be taught, we're saying we're afraid, and that we're against what we say we do, which is investigate.

[Dip: If we're saying (Flying Spaghetti Monsters) should never be taught, we're saying we're afraid...]

That argument carries no weight with the district's K-12 science supervisor, Robert Orlopp.

"There are lots of folks who, like me, want to stay open-minded," he said. "I don't believe they understand the real issue is that there is no scientific evidence one way or the other to prove or disprove there was a creator. Science relies on physical evidence. There is just no physical evidence to support (intelligent design) in a science class."

[Dip: I'll bet that guy gets fired.]

School Board member Linda Lerner, who identifies herself as a Reform Jew, does not think evolution and intelligent design are mutually exclusive.

"The district court (in Pennsylvania) acknowledged that evolution theory does not negate the existence of God, but it is not science," she said. "I do believe in some sort of intelligent designer, but I believe intelligent design is a theory that should not be taught in science class."

[Dip: It's not a theory. You can call a triangle a square all you like but that won't make it so.]

Board member Nancy Bostock thinks schools should teach both.

"I think as long as the public schools remain focused on the science behind the theory, they will be doing right by our community," she said. Bostock, who identifies herself as a Christian and believes that humans were "divinely created," said she wasn't surprised at the poll numbers. That more than half of the parents following the issue think intelligent design should be taught along with evolution simply reinforces the broad nature of the question, she said.

Some evolution supporters weren't surprised by the poll numbers, either.

The intelligent design movement has had "a good 10 years putting the spin on it their way," said Elsberry, with the science education center.

[Dip: Read: they've had 10 years to repackage Creation into a more politically palatable pill to shove down hapless kids' throat as they try to learn biology.]

He said the Pinellas numbers will swing the other way if intelligent design becomes more publicized and debated locally. But he also said the issue shouldn't be decided by opinion polls.

Astrology is popular, too, but that doesn't mean it should be taught in science classrooms, he said.

[Dip: Oh gawd, be quiet before you jinx us!]

"We don't decide science by popular vote."

I fail to understand why teaching science in science classes is such a hard concept to understand.

Intellegent Design's arguement is as follows:
"These things are complex, so something must have created them! Something powerful and intellegent. Tell the people! Inform CNN! I call myself a scientist, which means I am one. Oh, this doesn't have anything to do with religion. I'm a scientist; just look at my badge."

How can you teach something what is not 'searched-out' yet ??

That points only to one direction:

Is there an agreement what this ID-thing should be, at least ?
As Jiggy often said, what is evolution else than ID ? It's shaping towards survival...
These ID-guys should get clear about what they wanna teach.

Well, I can't tell you the answer Intellent Design gives, but I'd say that's an equivocation of the word "purpose" in this context. What I mean is that, contrary to the assertions of neo-Darwinists like Richard Dawkins, there is plenty of reason to believe that intentional behavior plays a large role in evolution, rather than just genetics.

Yeah you're right, but that would do nothing to discount randomness, since survival functions on an instinctual, biological, and deterministic level.

Only to the mind of one who is already biased towards determinism. Genetics may influence our decisions, but it's not as if every decision I will ever make is programmed into me at birth.

For an example of intentional behavior influencing genetics, I refer you to Darwin's famous Galapagos finches. Some finches would have at some point decided to eat a different kind of food. Their beaks would have later evolved to adapt to that food source after the DECISION to change its eating habits. Thus, behavior can influence genetics just as genetics influence behavior. Yet the Dawkins crowd continues to insist the influence only goes in one direction.

I would go as far as to say that every decision you will ever make was programmed into you during the Big Bang.

Behavioral patterns can cause adaptations, of course I wouldn't deny that, but the finches' initial decision to eat a different kind of food would most likely be a result of their physiological and environmental conditions at the particular time when they stumbled upon this newfound food source. I don't think that this indicates anything beyond the biological level.

I'm not suggesting anything beyond the biological level. What I'm saying is that assuming randomness is no more scientific than assuming a creator.

If we can agree that every effect has a cause, and that these could be traced back to the Big Bang (and further if you want to talk quantum mechanics), it seems that my assertion is not so much dogmatic as it is logical.

Above you said, "genetics may influence some of our decisions."  So you're saying that some of our actions are the product of genetics, while there is some variable that allows for free will at other times?

The influence does go in only one direction.

What actually happened on Galapagos was that the finches' beaks were constantly evolving to better eat the available food. This included a staple diet and also occasionally alternatives when they were abundant. As other species evolved beside them and the competition for food heated up, selective pressures disproportionately favored the more omnivorous members of the species at the expense of the less.

Eventually, the species found a new niche in the new food and the constant genetic slewing converged on a beak design more optimal for the new food and less optimal for the old.

The birds did not 'decide' to switch one day, they were slowly pushed toward the change by their competitors. Pushed not decided. It's a one-way process.

It would be logical to say that the Big Bang set off a chain of events that eventually led to me and the decisions I make, but that is not the same thing as having those decisions "programmed" into the Big Bang.  If you are familiar with quantum mechanics, then you surely you would see the error in the idea that a logical sequence of events could be programmed into some initial cause.  That violates a core principle of quantum mechanics:  Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle.  That principle shows the indeterministic way in which events occur.  Now, obviously, as we get onto a larger scale, we see the level of indeterminism decrease, and the certainty increase, but we never get to absolute certainty.  Furthermore, the fact that many parts of the universe, such as sentient beings, opens the door for the idea of sefl-determinism.  This is not to say that self-determinism necessarily exists, but there is good reason not to reject such an idea, even though several dogmatic atheists who claim to work under the name of science do just that.

Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle in no way rules out determinism, it just renders it impossible for us to predict the manner in which these deterministic events will unfold.

The factors which are obviously not genetic. For example, there is no gene for being poor. That is the result of environmental conditions and individual decisions. The whole concept of rich and poor is the result of something called society, which is the result of conscious interactions between individuals. We may have a genetic predisposition towards social behavior, but there is nothing in our genes determining what social institutions will manifest from those behaviors.

How does choosing the best strategy make it any less of a choice?

I use the word 'choice' for lack of a better one.

Species evolve to fill voids. When there's a niche that allows them to reproduce more successfully, they flow into it. They do not decide to go in some genetic direction and wait for a niche to develop; that would never work.

This is not a choice any more than when water filling a ditch is a choice. Evolution, like water, takes the path of least resistance.

That is pure conjecture. There is no indication in the fossil record that species are devoid of choice.

I see nothing to indicate that these individual decisions that you speak of are not genetically predetermined. The environmental conditions which you experience are the results of geographical distribution, or more simply, the location that your parents chose to copulate on the particular day that you happened to be conceived, and the sum total of the individual decisions you happened to make after the fact that led you to the environment which you currently inhabit.

That is pure conjecture. There is no indication in the fossil record that species are devoid of choice.

Where are you getting this?

In every case where there are fossils available, an incursion by another species or multiple species, or a climate change causing the depletion of food or other natural resource always precedes a punctuated equilibrium event.

This has been documented extensively by Dawkins, Gould, and others.

I know of no case where the fossil record shows a species arbitrarily moving to a new geographical location, then seeing if they can find a niche there. Same for arbitrary changes in diet.

And evidence aside, it doesn't make any sense that a species other than humans could 'decide' to start eating a new food. They eat whatever they CAN eat to stay alive and selection does the rest.

All speciation events so far found in the fossil record show that speciation is a reactionary process and never proactive.

The error lies in separating environment from the conscious beings in it. Their interactions are just as important to shaping the environment as any physical factors.

"Natural selection" is a vague and open term which can mean lots of things. If you read Darwin's works, I don't think you'll find such a reductionist interpretation of it as you'd find in Dawkins' work.

From what we can currently observe, we can safely conclude that every effect has a cause. That does it for me right there.

I wasn't separating the environment from the conscious beings in it, that would be foolish. The interactions between the beings in their environment can be reduced to pure instinctual clockwork.

I have read both authors, and by natural selection I mean that those best fit to survive within their environment will triumph over those who aren't so fortunate. This fits in quite well with the "rich" and "poor" dichotomy.

"Cause and effect" does not negate free will, for we cannot say that the same cause will always have the same effect. The fact that a decision is influenced by a cause or can be a cause of other events does not negate the fact that it is, in fact, a decision.

Only if you desire to make it so. There is no scientific basis for such reductionism.

Not necessarily. The rich are usually quite ill-equipped to handle themelves in a poor neighborhood, whereas many poor people could survive easily in a rich neighborhood. The rich-poor dichotomy is simply a symptom of a dysfunctional society.

Dude, obviously money alone isn't going to be sufficient for every aspect of survival, but I think we can agree that a family with money has much less to worry about when it comes to issues such as obtaining food, security, etc. Sure, being a member of the upper class isn't going to be of any assistance if you're dueling with a disgruntled crack dealer from the slums, or any such life threatening situation, but wealth is only one aspect of natural selection and it seems to be quite helpful in a capitalist society.

See, this is exactly what I'm talking about with environment encompassing the species in it. Money is only a survival tool because we have created a society based around it. It is meaningless without consensual behavior to back it up. There is nothing in our genetics about making money.

The foundation of the evolutionary process is nothing other than adapting to the current situation, and capitalism happens to be ours. The fact that our societal function is established by man makes it no less a part of nature. Of course there is nothing in genetics that is specifically implemented for making money, as it is an abstract, manmade concept, but genetic factors do dictate the extent to which we will be able to acquire it. Wealth or even moderate financial success does not guarantee survival or prosperity by any means, but nor does intelligence, physical strength, or any other single quality beneficial to surival, though each can be extremely helpful in an environment in which they can be effectively applied.

I do not deny that evolution is based on adaptation. What I am saying is that adaptation cannot be reduced to genetics. In fact, adaptation to new circumstances requires that we change our behavior from what we instinctively are inclined to do. Capitalism did not come from some source outside of us. It is the product of human social interactions, and was not simply something destined to occur(I would recommend reading Max Weber's essay The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism for further explanation). There was no need to adapt to capitalist society until human beings created it.

So you don't think that human social interactions can be interpreted on a genetic level?

They have a genetic component, but can they be reduced to genetics? Absolutely not.

i think marshall sahlins critique of sociobiology also makes some interesting points on this topic.

To thread:

Was the big-bang determined ? Are our decisions determined ?

For one, many causes are interwoven, so what is the original cause you can relay your determinision to ? If a butterfly can cause storms, what can an elephant-fart do ?

Second, if I am a slave and break free, I violated the determinism of my master as my master and mine as a slave. Suddenly the rules of my master have no effect anymore and I am free to make different decisions or go into another slavery until I break free again.
BUT, servants of their OWN accepted cause commune together AND there are guys, who know something better. You are FREE to select your master, without being a slave !

We are determined to freedom.

We discussed this in my government class, and I particularly liked the response of one of my classmates. She said that although she may even believe in intelligent design herself, and even though she thinks that people should at least be made aware of the idea (without having it taught as truth), intelligent design has no place in a science class because it is not accepted as fact among the majority of the scientific community. Rather, a separate religious studies class should be offered that observes many different religions in an objective manner.

Dover School Board Rescinds 'Intelligent Design' Policy As Alternative to Evolution

Newly-elected members of the Dover (Pa.) Area School Board, from left, Judy McIlvaine, Larry Gurreri and Rob McIlvaine, vote unanimously in favor of rescinding the inclusion of "intelligent design" from the biology curriculum of Dover High School, Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006,during a meeting in Dover, Pa. DOVER, Pa. Jan 3, 2006 ? The Dover school board on Tuesday rescinded its policy of presenting "intelligent design" as an alternative to evolution in high school biology classes, two weeks after a federal judge found the concept was religious and not scientific.

There was no discussion by members of the Dover Area School Board before the voice vote Tuesday night.

The policy, approved in October 2004, required that a statement be read to students about "intelligent design" before ninth-grade lessons on evolution. The statement said Darwin's theory is "not a fact" and has inexplicable "gaps." It referred students to an "intelligent-design" book.

On Dec. 20, U.S. District Judge John E. Jones III sided with eight families who argued that "intelligent design," which attributes the existence of complex organisms to an unidentified intelligent cause, is biblical creationism in disguise.

The school board said it was trying to improve science education by exposing students to alternatives.

But the judge said the board's real purpose was "to promote religion in the public school classroom," and said intelligent design could not be taught as an alternative to evolution in biology classes.

Most of the school board incumbents who had defended the policy were ousted in the November election, replaced by candidates who pledged to eliminate it.

The policy and federal lawsuit added fuel to a national debate over "intelligent design."
