Re: What is the difference between science and philosophy? [Re: Icelander]
    #8478656 -

Science is Natural Philosophy. That's what it was called for a century or so before they came up with the word "science".
It's simply philosophy that deals with the natural world. But it quickly became the most important "branch" of philosophy, for obvious reasons.

"Pythagoras to Plato to Plotinus, or from the Upanishads to Buddha to Padmasambhava, or from the Mosaic writings to Jesus to Meister Eckhart"

These ARE some of my preferences or I wouldn't have listed them. Also, Paul Tillich, Ram Dass, Tim Leary, Albert Hofmann, Richard Evans Schultes, William Emboden, Paul Stamets, Terrence & Dennis McKenna, The Dalai Lama, Lama Govinda, Ken Wilber, Eckhart Tolle, Alan Watts, Freke & Gandy, Elaine Pagals, Karen King, Evelyn Underhill, Hermann Hesse, Philip K. Dick, Robert Heinlein, Robert Thurman, Robert Crumb, The Wachowski brothers, John Shelby Spong, Jacob Boehme, Patanjali, Robert Fludd, John Dee, Giordano Bruno, Cornelius Agrippa, Alex Sanders, Maxine Sanders, Aleister Crowley, The Nag Hammadi library, David Elman, Sigmund Freud, Alfred Adler, C.G. Jung, Carl Rogers, Victor Frankl, Abraham Maslow, Rollo May, Erich Fromm, Karen Horney, Edmund Husserl, Frithjof Schuon, Frithjof Capra, Mircea Eliade, Joseph Campbell, Marie Louise von Franz, and my Dick & Jane primers come to mind along with my long lost Little Golden Books of which My Favorite Pony and Hansel and Gretel alone remain in my collection.

Thanks, great list  but I can't help to notice that Kuhn, Popper, Russell, Wittgenstein and the likes are not included. On the contrary I see lots of theologians, spiritualists, mystics, psychologists and few analytical philosophers. It is a matter of preferences yes. Maybe I should broaden my horizons.

I've read all of those except for Popper (exerpts only). Those thinkers are not among my favorites, and among my favorites I neglected William James, his godson William Herbert Sheldon...I mean my personal list of those who are luminaries in the heaven of my mind, is finite but not complete here. How much time do I need to invest in this query of yours? I'm an INTP which puts me in the 'spacier' realm of abstract thinkers, like C.G. Jung himself.

Science theorizes about that which is falsifiable, whereas philosophy theorizes about that which is non-falsifiable.  Whether certain philosophical theories are more or less rational than others does not establish that they accurately explain existence.  It is quite interesting to consider philosophical ideas, but a mistake (IMO) to  believe that they are explanations.

Falsifiability, while being particularly pertinent to empirical science, is within the implicit domain of philosophical research.  The Law of Non-Contradiction being one example.

Would you care to elaborate on philosophy's inability to explain existence?  This may be at the root of our discussion about the body/mind paradox.

The philosophy of science IS a school of philosophy that is focused on the empirical world.
As such, science is characterized by quantification based upon models that ultimately are reducible to discrete and numerically measurable quanta. Physics and chemistry have the Periodic Table of the Elements for example as a basis for the physically lawful characteristics of matter.

Philosophy in the Pythagorean definition of 'love of wisdom,' may include science (Latin: scientia - knowledge), but philosophy encompasses more than the empirical and quantitative domain. Philosophy also circumscribes metaphysics - that which is ontologically 'prior to physics.' Intuition, speculation, pure reason, ecstatic flight, contemplation, faith and other modes of apprehension that are not based upon empirical data belong to philosophy proper.

The philosophy of science might approach the 'how' of the Big Bang event, but the philosophy of religion might approach the 'why' of the same event. One is grounded in empirical evidence, the other is grounded in non-empirical, even non-rational modes of apprehension. One speaks of a theoretical singularity of infinite density which, at 10 to the -43 seconds ago externalized a 4-dimensional universe from a zero-dimensional point, the other says (for example) "Let there be Light..." One is about physics, the other is about metaphysics. Both are addressing a singular Reality.

For the most part, yes.  Do you recognize the difference between the philosophy of science, a categorical component of philosophy, and science itself, the practical side of science, i.e. its test tubes, microscopes, telescopes, hypotheses and theories?

Uh, yes. Those instruments would be the practical aspect of the logical Scientific Method. As a former science buff and home lab operator, I am familiar with laboratory procedure.

Here are a few picks of my home lab. The first one was taken while in junior high school and the second two in high school. The first LASER most people had ever seen (1970) and holography equipment (which unfortunately I never became proficient in, then I sold the equipment and went to college).

The shortest and most exact difference between science and philosophy (as well as the one thing barring philosophy from becoming a true science) is a matter of defining and obtaining objective truth.

First of all, objective truth is something that is always true, independent of the observer. Subjective truth is always true because it is subjective; you are always experiencing yourself and it is your own truth.

The scientist believes that objective truth is that which is experimentally validated and documented while the philosopher believes that logic and reason can be exercised (with care) in an individual in order to develop personal knowledge of objective truth, which can then be shared in speech instead of formula.

Cool pictures, nice labs.

Of course, it isn't axiomatic that a scientist knows the difference between the philosophy of science, vis-a-vis Kuhn, Popper et al, and the practice of science, vis-a-vis Pasteur, Mendel et al.

If entities can be objects of thought, they can be arrived at objectively.  No?

It is best to explain the difference as one of public and private experience.  While philosophy can be the domain of reflexive thought, it can engage in dialogue about public enterprises--meaning its "truths" can be just as objective as empirical science.

Science has no corner on objective truth.

Hmm. I wrote a reply but I'm not sure I fully understand what you're saying. Can you elaborate a bit further? It sounds interesting.

Now I'm a social scientist, and I'm not totally tupid, although I once did get a social disease from a Heineken-induced stupor in which my scientific logic was superceded by engorged erectile tissue.

Where we're going, we don't need no stinkin' brakes.
But hey, not an hour ago my TARDIS arrived in fine working order! The Doctor, Rose and K-9 were already here awaiting it!
