Re: A modest evolutionary approach to gaydom. [Re: NiamhNyx]

Well like I said, as it is reflected in politics and society, the argument of nature vs nurture doesnt matter to me at least. But how often do we talk about shit that doesn't matter in this forum? As a philosophical concept, I would argue that nature vs nurture is one of the fundamental philosophical questions. Essentially I think comes down to free will, another issue that "doesn't matter".

Yes, it definitly is. When I say (or agree) that it doesn't matter whether or not homosexuality is primarily caused by genetics or socialisation, I mean that either way there isn't anything wrong with it, it isn't going away, and who gives a damn what someone else wants to do with thier private lives anyways? Does it make a difference what causes homosexuality? It exists and it seems probable that it will continue to exist whether there is a genetic link or not. No matter what the cause, it seems pointless to have a problem with other people's personal preferences.

Right, I had this in the back of my mind when I originally posted. If sexuality is dynamic, will someone who is "kind of gay" be less likely to reproduce than someone who is more straight? You make a good point, I do not think this is necessarily the case.

When dealing with evolution, what we conceive as probability plays a huge factor. If something is generally the case, the large scale of evolution will conceivably exaggerate this. Could we go so far to say that the "more gay" a person is, generally the less likely he is to reproduce? I was assuming so, but I really do not know. I wish I knew more about evolution, to understand such dynamic traits.

I read an interesting study a while back that claimed that the more male offspring a woman has, the more likely that the next male offspring will be homosexual. (At least, statistically speaking, one study supports the finding that each older brother adds the probability of the next male sibling being gay by 33%.)

Perhaps homosexuality could be evolutionarily advantageous by serving as a form of population control?
