'Among those 450 participants, 76 percent were women.'

I find this ineteresting as it has been well-established that women are more into pseudo-science such as astrology, palmistry, psychics, et al, and religion than men.

Seems roughly the same proportion of women vs. men believe their NDEs to be of a spiritual nature. If NDEs were indicative of some universal mystical experience, I would find it more likely to have a near-even gender balance.

From other studies (not referenced here), I also believe there was bias as to race and religion which seems counter to the premise of a post-death glimpse.

Hehe. My brain's emulation of Elaine Pagels had something stupid to say about that. "It's because women are more harmoniously in tune with our evolving faith".

Really, it hasn't got anything to do with that. We raise our girls on Cosmo and Bratz Dolls, and train them to expunge their heads of sense and effectuality. Then you have pressures all through academia suggesting to them that they aren't good in the sciences, so a lot of them probably adopt that kind of attitude as reaction, rather than trying to show the crusty old geezers wrong.

The girls over at skepchick.org are kicking some ass, and I hope that continues. Maybe this discrepancy will vanish in a few decades.

Now, Major Scull is very clear that his OBE happened during his cardiac arrest. What we need to do is to test this. Sartori, from Morriston hospital in the U.K., did this in a study for her Ph.D. thesis, not yet published. Using a method suggested by Janice Holden (Holden, 1988; Holden and Joesten, 1990), Sartori put randomized cards on top of the monitors displaying the patient’s medical data, which are always present in patient rooms, usually beside the bed. Because the monitors were above eye level of a person standing up, the cards on top of them could not normally be seen by the nurses.

The question is, of course, when people left their bodies, did they see the cards? What would you guess? What are you NDErs going to look at when you leave your bodies? Are you going to look around the room, have a look at the monitors, see if there are any cards hidden there? You are not going to be interested in impersonal cards. The only thing you are interested in is this thing lying on the bed, which is your body, and nothing else. And that is exactly what happened in Sartori’s study. I had thought that people would see the cards, but they did not.


You have to love how the believers 'explain' the failed test - just like when psychics and dowsers and astrologers fail; there is ALWAYS an excuse.

As the author says in her article, the differance doesnt reflect how many women versus men had these experiences, nor even how many thought they were meaningfull. Rather the differance reflects that the women were more eager to talk about their experiences after the fact.

That is consistent with established psychological tendencies that say women generally place a higher value on experience sharing then men.

It says nothing about the mystical or non mystical origin of NDE's.

Do you have facts and statistics to back that up, or are just stereotyping(i.e. pulling facts out your ass)?

That would be my guess. Those of us who have had an obe or nde don't need to 'prove' it to anybody. We know what we saw and felt. Those who don't believe are free to do so.

It isn't a stereotype. Baylor's religion department did a study on metaphysical and paranormal belief and found that it is overwhelmingly skewed towards women. It's been in the news a lot lately.

Whatever that means. Why not just speak for yourself? The international NDE community did NOT elect you as spokesperson so you have no idea what millions of others feel, yet you just make up these statements as if they were fact - sort of like the meaning assigned to an NDE.

Thank you for your permission. :rolleyes: Of course this has been covered thousands of times and here we are again back at square one. Yes, the NDEer knows his / her visions and feelings - THAT has never been in question. What IS in question, is the interpretation of the experience. Until one person brings back some external knowledge gained during/from an NDE, there is no evidence of anything leaving the body.
