Do we DESERVE Earth?

This basic question was posted elsewhere but I though it is it's own discussion...
I think we do deserve Earth. Earth is whatever the inhabitants make it...the more we screw it up, the more screwed up our home is, in turn the more screwed up we become. The better we make it, the better it is, the better we become.
We are creating our entire place and right now I think we are on a slow march to creating something of a hell. No matter, if that happens then the O-Zone will die, the Caps will melt, etc. and all that means is the current inhabitant of this place will become extinct. In do time other inhabitants will evolve so the climate we created suits them and it will carry on.
I don't we are making the Earth worse or better. Oh sure, we are making it worse for the current inhabitants but the actual planet will continue to harbor life in some form long after ALL inhabitants of this place are gone. I mean if we destroy the O-Zone layer it may very will be bad for us, but after we are gone there will be creatures who are tolerant to the effects of no O-Zone layer.
Humans are only a character in the greater scheme of Earth...Once we have really screwed up the Earth will finish us off and go onto to something else. (Now if only I could make the SUV assholes understand this)

Hi 'alicious, thanks for this post. I feel we don't deserve the earth, but I may have a more narrow vision than your thoughts. I suppose it is conceivable that creatures will thrive with little ozone layer for UV buffering, but we must be speaking about millions of years of evolution. The nice and appropriate environmental systems that have cultivated themselves over billions of years, we are ripping down in hundreds of years. I hate to think of the diversity of life on earth that will remain after those systems are TOTALLY fucked. For me, I think it selfish to think, "ok, we fucked and are fucking ourselves, so be it, the rock called earth will still remain in some form, fortunately without us"..or some similar type of thinking, because the incredible, beautiful, completly innocent creatures that ARE here do not deserve our behavior....most of them have been around, struggling to survive much longer than our branch, and they deserve to dictate their own reality. I can accept that at present, and long into the past, and undoubtedly into the future, our species is on a terrible path. I cannot accept that we will drag all the lovely OTHER millions of forms of life with us, as we have been doing. I would rather kill 10 people than one squirrel. Maybe that comment wasnt appropriate, but in my mind it is sensible. Loved your comment about SUV people!! ---Ec0

I definitely agree with you about the animals, we are messing them up to and they are innocent.

yeah, I'd kill a hundred people before I killed one squirrel. But I'd rather not kill anyone

Hey... Was there a reason you wrote DESERVE in caps? Because I think this is an interesting point....does DESERVE even exist? Concious judgements like this are a product of humans and therefore I don't really think that we can accuratley apply these to ourselves.... Life is a very, very strange thing. Yet I don't think that it is life that is fucked up, it is our own minds which have somewhere along the line taken a leap into conciousness....Should we be asking 'Why?' or should we be asking why we CAN ask 'Why?' To me, nothing is un-natural. The earth started off as a rock. From there life started, and after millions of years, we are where we are today....even the glowing monitor you are staring at at this moment is perfectly natural....how could it be otherwise? So I think it is futile to ask weather we are deserving of this planet or not....we occured....we came about....we ARE...is there really anymore than that? Sure, I do love 'nature' (in the traditional sense of the word) and I think it is a thing that should be preserved....but we must remember that it is through the eyes of HUMANS which we are viewing this, and so even the want of preservation is SELFISH in a way....we just need it to look at or make us feel better....give us air....help us live....so yes, we as a race are choking ourselves and we are taking everything else down with us. Tragic, isn't it. Or is it? I think in a way the human destruction of earth is a BEAUTIFUL climax to our evolution, and I think that this overall death is nothing more than another affirmation of LIFE! Life does not know what 'perfect' or 'ideal' is, not happiness, sadness, these are all human qualities, products of structure and communication....so, the death of earth won't really MEAN anything, it will just BE....and it will be interesting.....

Peace_Patrol: good post, esp. the whole "nature" thing
I don't think we'll destroy the earth. Sure, we'll give it some scars, but we'll stop just short of destruction.

I think I have go with Leary's view on this, and the fifth circuit is preparing us for interstellar migration into space. Earth is just one out of billions of planets.

Me: Thanks. *TA walks away* Me: Gawd... friggin' service is so slow sometimes... next time I'm flying Lysergic Air.
